GX620 black screen, blinking cursor- no logo, diagnostic lights 1,2,3 lit

This question is not answered

Hello- In my computer lan I have a machine that goes straight to a blinking cursor on a black screen.  Solid green light on power button.   Drive lights up when disk is inserted.  No beep codes but diagnostic lights 1,2,3 are lit.  According to manual:

An other failure has occurred.

This pattern also displays during System Setup and may not indicate a problem.

  • Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the
system board from the hard drive, CD drive, and DVD drive.
  • Check the computer message that appears on your monitor
    screen.
  • If the problem persists, contact Dell.

I have checked that RAM and cables are correctly seated.  I also checked the capacitors on the motherboard for damage or bulging tops per another discussion.  I am still getting this issue.  I have other GX620s I can cannabalize from but I don't know what to narrow it down to.  It would be great if it is't a hardware issue too (there are NO peripherals at all).  Thank you for your time, help, and suggestions.

  • First thing you might try is clearing BIOS setup:

    1. Power off and unplug
    2. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
    3. Open case and remove motherboard battery
    4. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
    5. Reinstall the battery (right-side-up!)*
    6. See if it boots now with only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected.

*If battery is more than ~2-3 years old, this might be a good time for a new one. It's a 3-volt lithium ion coin cell battery, ~$2-$3 at discount stores.
