I recently upgraded from XP to Win 7 x64 and try as I might, I simply cannot get the USB ports on this machine to run at 2.0 speeds. I haven't been able to find any information as far as an updated driver for the Intel ICH8 chipset. Everything shows up correctly - the driver is for the Intel ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2830, version 6.1.7600.16445 (usbhub.sys, usbport.sys, usbuhci.sys) from 6/21/2006. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Do you see an "enhanced USB host controller", or something to that effect, in device manager?
Please post back and let me know if you need more help.
I do not, in fact this is all I see:
Actually, the lowest two on the ICH8 are Enhanced, but I didn't see it earlier.
That tells me it's installed properly. So how are you checking the transfer speeds?
I've tried every device I own (usb external hard drives, flash drives, cameras, etc) and haven't realized over a 1MB/s transfer. Whether it's a large amount of small files or a single large file, it's slow slow slow. I'm really just perplexed by it.
Well, I found a solution - and I'm kicking myself!
A simple uninstall/reinstall of the USB controllers fixed the issue and now my speeds are at a normal level. Confusing, but at least it's fixed.
