Dell Dimension 4400 HDD reformat and OS install

This question is not answered

Well after having my old Dimension 4400 sitting around I tried to fix it. After having a BSOD (blue screen of death) like 4 years ago, it magically started working. I immediately got all my information off the hard drive and decided I would reformat and reinstall Windows XP (2001) onto it with the discs that were originally shipped out with the computer

I've had some major problems and I can never seem to actually get Windows installed on there correctly. The first time I couldn't get the drive to Format NTFS from booting with the CD-ROM but eventually got passed it. The furtherest I've gotten is when the Windows XP prompt is 'finalizing installation' and then it just freezes there. I've (re)partitioned the hdd atleast 5 times and reformated (successfully) 4 times.

I need to know what I gotta do in order to get my Windows back up and running. I've ran a Windows Memory Diagnostics (.iso file from Microsoft support) check that tests the RAM which is good; according to the tests. I'm about to give up and just see if Geek Squad can do it or if I should go out and buy a new hdd and try all over again, but with a brand-spankin new one.

Any suggestions? It would mean alot and thanks!

Given everything you've tried - and how many times you've tried them, it would suggest there's almost certainly a problem with the hard drive - i.e. (too many) bad sectors?

There's no other reason (that I can think of) why you wouldn't be able to complete installation of the OS?

From experience, I've found that:   “Beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder”!!
