Cant get a Gigabit connection on a XPS410 with Intel 82566DC Gigabit controller

  • I am hooking an XPS410 to a Linksys WRT600N Gigabit switch/router. The intel 82566DC has the latest driver installed (8/30/07 ver 9.10.8.0). The XPS410 refuses to negotiate anything over 100 MBps with the

    Gigabit switch.

The Linksys switch seems to be fine as I can connect a Vista Laptop with Intel 82566MM gigabit controller at 1 Gbps

I tried to tweak the driver  property "Link Speed & Duplex" under the Advanced tab to "Auto-negotiate 1000mbps" to no avail. If I set the property the intel NIC wont even connect (red cross with status disconnected). So I am forced to leave it on the default setting "Auto Detect". And with that I am stuck at

    100 Mbps connection.

Anyone has had luck getting a 1 Gbps connection with similar hardware?

    Thanks

  • Had this problem on a couple of Optiplex 755s.  Same network card, though (the 82566).  Had to go into into network adapter properties and change "Gigabit Master Slave Mode" from AutoDetect to "Force Master Mode".  This was with a Linksys SD2005 switch.  Worked fine with a Netgear switch.  Took quite a while to troubleshoot, but changing this setting resolved the problem.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for posting this.  Helped enormously.  I spent an evening trying different drivers, network cables, ports on the switch to try and get better than 10Mbps on an Optiplex 755.  This was on a Linksys SD2008 switch.

I ended up having to remove the network card from device manager and then install the latest drivers from Intel's web site in order to get the driver option "Gigabit Master Slave Mode" in the advanced settings.  Not sure if this was as a result of all the previous install/deinstalls though.

Once I set it to "Force Master Mode" I got the Gigabit connection immediately.

    Thanks again, Laurence

  • I"m having the exact same problem. .

"intel 82566DC has the latest driver installed (8/30/07 ver 9.10.8.0). The XPS410 refuses to negotiate anything over 100 MBps with the Gigabit switch".

Same card, same driver, same XPS-410, same problem. My issue is that I don't see any way to "Force Master Mode". Can someone tell me where to find this property, as it

DOES NOT SHOW UP in the properties window from device manager when I select the card. I was using a wireless connection so I didn't notice the problem before, but now the PC has been moved and I'm stuck.

I can't find anything else on the net indicating how to change it.

    Any help is appreciated.

    thank for the help.

  • I'm using about the same thing,  and mine won't get over 100 mbps too, there is one thing I know of, and one thing you can try, It might be an error inside the chip, it also could be that it does not support anything over 100 mbps, you can try rolling back the driver, which is what I'd do.  Good Luck!

  • Thanks, for the tip on the driver, but the previous driver doesn't work either. I think it's probably defective and Dell doesn't care.

Unfortunately, in my case anyway, since I was using a wireless I didn't catch it in time to get it replaced under warranty and now Dell cares even less than usual. Seems kind of wrong that there are lots of people stuck with an effectively non-working interface, but, I'll keep hoping someone turns up that knows how to find the switch to force master mode.. Internet searches have turned up nothing so far...
