No Audio Device - Dell Optiplex Gx270

I just installed XP -sp3 on a Dell Optiplex Gx270. The sound doesn't work.   There is no 'speaker symbol' on task bar.

I went to the device manager, and clicked on sound -- NOTHING shows up.

I went to control pannel and  under sounds it states no audio device.

I also checked the computer bios, and 'sound' was 'on' and 'speakers' were 'off' so I switched that 'on' - but still no change.

  • The Soundmax AC97 Codec driver is specific to the GX270 its not native to the XP CD.

    4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
    icon appears on your desktop.

    Install

    1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R58182.EXE.
    2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
    unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r58182. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
    Setup.exe) file can be found later.
    3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
    4.Click OK.
    5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
    window is still open, close it.
    6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
    7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r58182 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
    8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

  • More details:  In the control panel, is says "no audio device," it gives be no options of things to choose from.  Also this computer is not connected to the internet.  I can download on another computer and transfer it.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH.  I was looking for a download of SoundMAX, but could not find one that would download and work.  Thanks for the info and link to R58182.exe -- that was the correct ver for my Dell GX270.    After I ran the extractor, I closed out as your instructions stated and did not do   'install' option there,  tried to use "run" command, nothing happened.  So I went to c:/Dell/Drivers/58182 and clicked the 'setup'  ---  I HAVE SOUND!!!

    I had to reinstall Windows XP pro. I figured out I had to download drivers when I couldn't get onto the Internet, but somehow overlooked that the audio was not happening.

    Searched.....found......SOLVED!

  • I have done this several times today and I keep getting the same message that there is a error  loading the iKernel.exe (0x10000) file.

    I have instructed the computer to overwrite just that file and all the files and I am getting the same result every time...

    We have run a malware detector, Run AVG scan, Disk scans.   I have not yet run a defrag.  My daughter is thinking I may have a bad spot on the disk...

    Please help.  Every time something goes wrong with this dang computer my husband thinks it is my fault....

  • Running chkdsk /r from a command prompt will find and fix bad disk spots. Running SFC /SCANNOW will find and fix corrupted system files.

    To confirm, you have an Optiplex GX 270 with Windows XP?

  • I appear to be one of many who only get the "ikernel" error message when I do this (SpeedStep's instructions).  There is apparently a common problem that we need to solve somehow.
