Can I turn off IDT PC Audio from the startup apps?

I was getting this message every day regarding this app:

"IDT PC Audio has stoped working and was closed."

Then, in Event viewer under System logs: " The Audio Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s)."

The Event Log Online help refers me here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756320.aspx  which makes no sense to me, maybe someone can explain it...

And under Event viewer Application logs it says: "Faulting application STacSV64.exe, version 1.0.6017.1, time stamp 0x4835e75e, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791ad6b, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000000000003237, process id 0x1e8, application start time 0x01c9c2a5a3dac46a."

Tech support just loaded the latest driver for this to try and fix it but that apparently did no good.

Now: The question I am asking is:

Is my turning off IDT PC Audio in the Configuration Startup apps utility CAUSING this error??? Because I don't want it in my system tray (I have enough other things there, and I"m a believer in not having things run at startup that you don't really need)...

So 1) What is causing the error?

and 2) Can I turn IDT PC audio off in StartUp apps without causing this error? (Im not sure if it is causing it or not... I think not, but something is causing it...)

  • This is the integrated audio sound module and if you do not have the optional SoundBlaster Xfi sound card then this is needed and if you start turning off parts of it then your sound will not work or not work fully or correctly.  The problem needs to be resolved.

    THIS is the SigmaTel (IDT) sound driver.  You may want to try and install it yourself and see if it fixes it.  But, before you attempt to fix it, do a System Restore back to a date PRIOR to tech support's action.  System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.  System Restore will not delete any user data or e-mails.

    Another option, if this is fairly new is to do to a complete reinstall using the Dell Recovery partition on the hard drive (accessed by F8 at initial boot up  See THESE Dell Instructions). It could even be a Vista corruption problem and not the IDT software that is causing the problem.   If you decide to do a complete reinstall, backup up any user data to a CD or DVD as it will be lost when you do the reinstall.

    That is the exact driver the Dell tech re-installed (I had already installed it but he got rid of the driver previous to the one I installed and re-installed that and did an uninstall/reinstall of the program. I watched as he did this via remote and since I know something about computers I could see that he knew what he was doing, he did it very quickly, with a restart in between, and he moved the driver into the IDT folder instead of the Drivers folder where I had put it.

    If what you say ist true, that this MUST run, then it should be just a matter of my turning it back on in the Configuration > Startup panel.

    I was not aware that I could not turn it off, because the sound works just fine without it and I have experienced no problems other than the error messages.

    One thing though: Can't I get this thing out of my system tray?? Most programs have an option but I see no such option on this one.

    Hopefully my turning it back on in the Config panel will prevent the errors from re-occurring.

  • I keep the Sys Tray "clean" on my PC's too.  That was on my home built PC that had SigmaTel when I first started it up and I remember getting rid of it, but I don't remember how.  Seems to me it was something in the Control Panel's Sounds panel but I really don't remember.  I disabled the SigmaTel as I'm using a SoundBlaster sound card in this PC (the one I'm using now).

  • Thanks for that info. I'll see if I can enable it again and see if that solves the problem, and if it does, then I'll try to figure out how to keep it enabled but get it out of my system tray. I used Soundblaster before and had good luck with it.

  • Best to start a new item rather than tag on to an old post.  When you make the new post, include your PC Model Number and Operating System - required for someone to give you assistance based on your PC, there are too many different Dell models.
