No sound or multimedia audio controller gx520

  • I've read & tried as many threads as I can take.  My eyes burn.  I have no sound, no m-media audio controller.  Device manager has exclamation/questoin marks beside soundmax, sm bus control, mm audio controller.  I have the dell optiplex drivers resource cd, have unistalled and reinstalled same.  xp serv pack2 professional, installed all drivers after service pack2.   I completely reinstalled all system, office, windows, etc on gx520 then added missing components but nothing.  I've redone the gx270 & gx280 in the exact same manner with no sound problems.  Where did I go wrong?

  • First, the Workstation/Optiplex section if for support with your Optiplex.  This Desktop section is for consumer Dimension and Inspiron Desktop system support.

However, on these systems there are "chipset drivers" that define what is on the motherboard and if there is a reinstall, the chipset drivers must be installed before installing device drivers such as the sound.  e.g. (1) Install the operating system (2) install chipset drivers (3) install device drivers.  It may be the same on the Optiplex.+

  • try installing the driver from this page, it worked for me.

  • Thank you!  Unfortunately the file R56339.exe installed just fine but didn't fix the problem.  I did find another answer and link for R142745.zip; but, the link is broken and the Dell site doesn't have information on it (much less the file)!  The problem is a Dell 520 which has a Multimedia Audio driver not found.

    Thanks anyway for trying.

  • Neither R56339.exe nor R142745.exe is the right file.

Never go to those non dell sites they seed the files deliberately with malware.
