Apologies for the intrusion, but you indicated that the computers worked properly provided that you entered the key directly in hexidecimal characters. This would be normal for WEP between two devices manufactured by different vendors. The pass phrase concept was not standardized for WEP, only for WPA. If you happen to be using equipment manufactured by the same vendor, you can use a pass phrase for WEP. Otherwise you nearly always have to enter the encryption key using hexidecimal.

Try right clicking on the file to access the "Properties" menu. Look at the bottom of the Properties box: Do you have a note there referring to protecting your computer and showing a button to click to unblock the file? Try clicking that and see if the file now works.

Apologies for the intrusion; I just went through this with my son's D2400. Did you remember to go to setup (F2 during the self test) and set the port to Auto? If you don't do this, Windows will still see the drive but the I/O will be PIO mode, and you need it to be in UDMA.
