Just purchased a 2nd Vostro 420 this week and it does the same thing, one beep at startup every time, so I guess that's normal. And a Dell pro-level tech spent over an hour with me on the phone trying to diagnose the "problem" that apparently doesn't exist. Only a day or two later did he call back and state one beep is the norm. Other than you makane nobody else has checked in on this now-old question. europa

Have just received a new Vostro 420 (XP Pro, quad core processor), and it beeps once from the internal speaker at every start or restart, no exceptions. The troubleshooting guide states one beep indicates a bios checksum error, but Dell Pro Support, after some research over the weekend, tells me one beep is perfectly normal for the Vostro 420 and is no cause for concern. I have my doubts, although there is no indication of a problem otherwise. Ran Dell diagnostics over the weekend and no errors reported

The Inspiron 530 does have a dual voltage power supply. See this: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/appendix.htm#wp1052310 There is a small red slide switch for changing the voltage: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/en/OM/HTML/setting.htm#wp1144730

Go ahead and try the new 1 GB with the old 256 MB, no harm will be done. The diminished performance referred to above should be more than offset by the increased memory you have installed. I believe you will see increased performance overall. If you later want to replace the old 256 MB module with another module like you just bought, you can do so, but try the old and new together first and see how it goes.

By any chance did you install "value ram" such as Kingston KVR modules? Many reports of value ram not working correctly with older Dell models.
