Well, you made me look -- my 1525n middle jack doesn't work either. Now I'm unhappy. I suspect it's software, but I'll look at the entries on the Windows section of this forum. It's bad enough that every kernel upgrade means a manual futzing with drivers.

Ummm, DELL-Jesse L, there are three jacks. The left one has a headphone icon. The middle one has a headphone icon. The right one has a microphone icon. Page 18 of the Inspiron Setup Guide shows and discusses two "Audio Out / Headphone connectors" and one "Audio in / Microphone connector". If your meaning is "only the left jack is supposed to work", then OK.

Good work. Both of the changes you've made remove minor annoyances -- but the forum itself is a great help when I need it. Thanks.

After suffering through two "sound disappears after a linux kernel update" occurrences, I figured out that new Ubuntu upgrades break sound links (see the recent thread on this board). I also discovered that shortly after the Ubuntu package comes out, Dell follows with its own replacement that works. Obviously, it would be good if the Dell changes could be incorporated into the Ubuntu package, but failing that, it would be really good if someone could tell me how I can authenticate Dell

I just went through the hassle of getting sound working again after upgrading to 2.6.24-22 and I can confirm that the instructions in the wiki work -- with slight modifications. (I'm using an inspiron 1525N.) Here's what I did: Restore name of sound driver that old modem driver renamed: $ cd /lib/modules/2.6.24-22-generic/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda $ sudo mv snd-hda-intel.ko.REPLACEDBYhsfmodem snd-hda-intel.ko Remove old sound drivers from kernel module directory: $ cd /lib/modules
