Several M18x owners are having issues with Windows Aero/Transparency effects turning off randomly. We are also having problems with aero effects being re-enabled after exiting a benchmark like 3dMark (the program sets aero to windows 7 basic during the bench). Here is a link to the notebook review forums where a number of users are experiencing this problem. As I stated on that forum, we all seem to have various setups with different CPUs, GPUs, type/size of memory, type/size of hard drive, different drivers, and we're using various versions of windows 7. That being said, I strongly believe this to be chipset or bios related.
M18x Aero issues on Notebook Review Forums
I also have this problem with my M18x. I have seen this problem on 5 out of 5 M18x's. It truly is annoying!!!
I also have this issue-Alienware m18XR1-Red-I7 2630-8GB-2xATI6970M-CorsairForce3 RAID0-WLED
Same here. We tested over 10 M18x machines and each has the aero glitch. Hopefully it gets proper attention soon.
This is a problem that needs serious attention. I'm still within my 21 day return period and I'm NOT happy with Dells TOP OF THE LINE flagship model having such ridiculous problems. :(
Put me down as another M18x owner that is having Aero issues. Please Dell, investigate this issue as it really is annoying when a multi thousand pound system cant run Windows properly.
I had this issue on a M17x R3 laptop from Alienware, with the i& 2630QM CPU and AMD 6970M video card.
As I am writing this my aero effects have been dropped. If I reboot there is a 50/50 chance aero will work, there is also a 50/50 it will not. Very ammaturish imo. Hope it can be fixed soon. I love my M18X but this sort of thing is just odd.

Chris, isn't the hotfix for the Vista OS? Will is apply to Windows 7?
Although it is not a cure, installing the latest driver from Intel for the HD 3000 IGP seems to improve (reduce the frequency) of the aero bug. Some are also reporting improvement by disabling WinSAT in Windows Task Manager.
If this suggestion answers your question or leads to a solution, please click the green "Yes" button in the bottom of this post.
In addition to the aero bug, I also have an issue with "dead space" at the top of the display. It is being reported by another Alienware owner on this thread en.community.dell.com/.../19906830.aspx and it may be related.
A thread was started in the Laptop General Hardware Forum for a bug with Aero that M18x owners are reporting. Here is that thread if you would like to post: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19388893/19906835.aspx#19906835
We also have a thread going at Notebook Review to try to isolate the problem and find a solution. Here's a link for anyone that would like to join us in trying to find a solution to the problem. http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m18x/588142-m18x-windows-aero-34.html#post7704841 I
n addition to the Aero bug (but possibly related) is a problem with unusable space at the top of the display. The wallpaper is visible in this area, but the strip at the top of the display is not usable. When a window is maximized to full screen, that space is not used. A log-off/log-on often corrects it. This has also been reported on the M14x. Here is a link to that thread: http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/p/19389109/19906830.aspx#19906830
We need Alienware/Dell Engineering to fix this for us ASAP.

Chris, can you please give us a line of sight on the level of attention Dell is giving to this issue and whether or not they have any resources actively looking for a solution? Have they identified the cause yet? How many systems other than the M18x are affected? Is it specific to AMD CFX systems, or also prevalent on NVIDIA SLi system?
Too early in the escalation to answer your questions. Run the hotfix on Win7 and tell us what happens. When you run the WEI (Windows Experience Index) assessment, does Aero get toggled on?
