MX17-R2 AlienFX won't work after reinstalling Win 7

  • Upgraded (clean full install) from Home Premium that came with the alienaware to Win 7 Ultimate and lights are not working no matter what version of Command Center I tried...

Rolled back to home premium from the CD that came with my MX17 and went through the same process still no luck!!

This is impossible as there seems to be no hardware issue but software/bios and OS for whatever reason and looks like all over the world this IS (unfortunately) a pretty common issue. Latest command center versions 2.5.48 and 2.5.54 give the error below but .NET 3.5.1 IS installed...

My current BIOS version is A07 and ALL except the ligts and darn command center works on both Win 7 ultimate x64 or Home Premium x64 zo....Does anyone has any idea how to revive the dead lights of an MX17-R2 alien?

    Best regards...

  • << My current BIOS version is A07  >>

Current BIOS for the M17x R2 is A10. Are you sure you haven't got an R1, or maybe you were confused with the version of CC as v2.5.54 s also known as A07?

  • this same thing is happening to me also ,  just as i upgraded to another o/s  different from the factory Win 7,  i got an Alienware Laptop M17x ,   i was told i could have something to do with my synaptics touchpad that has not been working since that same day .   any clues bout how to solve the touchpad or lighting problem ? the could be associated  ??

  • try to install new BIOS A10 if you are sure yours is R2. 7league is correct.. current BIOS for R2 is A10..

  • C double U,

Can you say please what I need to do to fix this problem at m17x  ?

  • lol..firstly, so sorry mate, i am not too expert with this because my R2 is currently having so much problems too after i did recovery from the [rubbish] resource CD..much problems than yours mate..and still unsolved..and i am so sick with my R2 now..

but, an upgrade to BIOS will help you i think..I will reinstall the windows soon enough, i will inform you whether there's a problem with AlienFX or not..btw..check your inbox..

  • alright  , we will,,  i am pretty sure that mine is just a plain m17x ,  here i leave the specs just in case .  intel (r) Core (TM)2 Extrrme CPU , Q9300  @ 2.53 ghz.   2.53 ghz.     8 gb de ram .   win 7 ultimate

  • ok , I'm interesting in why technical support ( technical people from dell ) not help us with this problem ?

btw , sorry for my english

  • i agree with sergeiz,   shouldnt be there someone from technical support cheking out this issue, it may sound like a detail to them but to us owners, well decided and PAY for our lighted keyboard..... i have never had a problem solved by technical support, but now since i spent 3000 bucks on thys portable system  i  please please need some feedback  from someone that can either tell me  to go  pick up a new one  or  even better,  guide us trough a solution ....   we aint asking for magik or anything

  • I have indeed the original invoice from DELL and service tag leads me to a support page system config that says:

"This Alienware Laptop M17xR2 support page will help you find all the support related content you need for your Dell product. Explore the latest FAQs, troubleshooting articles and community entries. Get the drivers and downloads, check for upgrades and spare parts available for your Alienware Laptop M17xR2 and review your warranty status. All in one place"

so if they are wrong(which is posible but unlikely) then I'm wrong.

Indeed, I can't understand how come the web is full of such identical/similar issues and two monsters like DELL and Microsoft cannot (or maybe they don't want to) figure out how to make work a piece of hardware with Win7 os. Amazing yes - amoozing....definitely NOT for such an expensive (alien) laptop. My IT buddies at work spent a few days to try find the right combination of BIOS/Drivers/Alien command center but failed to do so..

I'll try the latest bios 10 but....would be nice indeed if anyone at dell would pitch in and offer some advice about some triplet BIOS/Drivers/Alien command center that works on a M17xR2 or MX17x10 from the invoice whatever that would be.

I hope they will read it !!!

  • since my last post  forum post was deleted by a moderator  because it violates the Dell Community Terms of Use.

they  encouraged me   to edit my post to comply with the Terms of Use,  so  here i go again...  Alienware its to McLaren when it comes to Personal Computers,,  so why is a company that we charish and we stick to them no matter what, leaves us  with tied hands with this issue ?  i am not writing to extress disgust or anger. i am expressing my sadness for feeling that my once perfect m17x  isnt gonna shine anymore,, and the reason... No expert is helping the case... its not like im asking for a new machine, or a refund...  guys like me, we just need some orientation..   hope  this is compilant with the terms of use. if i bother is because i am a customer, and a very polite one i might add..

  • I'm totally agree with djmagicdust .

    we need support !

  • Unfortunately (and as somewhat expected) BIOS A10 did not helped in my case. I uninstalled Alien Command Center 2.5.54 tried 2.5.48, and 2.5.54 again but no luck with the AlienFX - is still dead and same error like I posted on the top occurs with both versions....this is sad because device manager shows that all drivers are installed and working.

  • Once you have gone forwards you cannot go backwards so, as with many others here, it's almost certain our MIO controller is dead. You will have to contact Dell support.
