m11x hinge issues?

  • I heard from my friend that they got the hinge problem solved.
    * That is true for the M11x-R3 but false for the M11x-R1 and M11x-R2. We are still working on the solution. When it is resolved, I will let you all know. No, I do not know when the R3 will be available nor do I know its specifications.

  • The m11x I order is from this one.

Which one is it? R3 R2 or R1?

  • Based on the CPU choices, that is an R2.

  • Thanks man.

  • I like how they fix the issue for computers that aren't even out yet but ---- over the people who already own one... way to go Dell!!!

  • Hmmmm.... not so hot at fixing issues, but they are 'crackerjack' at deleting posts they don't like!

  • Chris M -

Please add my voice to the list of those EXTREMELY displeased to hear that the problem has been "fixed" on revision of the product that is not even available yet while those of us who paid GOOD MONEY (half of my tax-return last year to be exact) for a faulty product are left to wonder what exactly is going to be done to resolve it in the long-term.  Is there any possibility of Dell / Alienware offering a credit to return an R1 to be used to "upgrade" to an R3?

  • That would revive my interest in alienware if they did give a credit to return these faulty R1's and upgrade to a R3 but I doubt dell cares that much about its customers their more concerned about profits from what i experienced thus far.

Add me to the list of people with this issue and very displeased.  I found a bunch of things on the web on this and stumbled onto this forum.  I guess this is a very big issue.  I have been extra careful with the hinge on this M11X.  I wanted it to last.  Three months into owning it the keys started showing up as outlines which I could wipe off the screen.  About six months into it the hinge actually moves around on the left side.  No cracks yet but the creaking when I open it has gotten worse.  It looks like if you have the creaking it is already gone.  I have called Alienware in the past and as for the screen and the keys hitting it they just told me to wipe the screen off with the provided cloth.  Not sure what I want to do with the creaking.  If there is a recall or something I want in on it but what if they replace it and then I need to return it yet again a month later?

Frustrating to say the least.  Not sure with this amount of "non-acknowledgement" from Dell/Alienware that I will ever buy another.  Yes, very frustrating.  I owned a laptop from dell before this and it lasted six years and the hinge never had any problems.  I sold it when I got the Alienware M11X and now I am wondering if I should not have just bought the Asus I was looking at instead.  At least I don't see any hinge problems (or any other problems for that matter) with it.

Yes, as someone else said, I would even go as far as trading up with some added cost to a r3 if the hinge problem is fixed.  I just don't understand why there is no official response from Dell/Alienware as of yet.  At this point I will say that I will not suggest for anyone to get any of the M11X machines.  Even if the r3 is suppose to not have the issue how can we be guaranteed? If they did not test the hinge on the R1 or R2 then why even that they test the new r3?

  • To those wondering why Dell/Alienware has not given a response, just go ahead and ask Chris, he has yet to give any of us any true response on the issue. Dell employees are trained to not answer our questions, that way Dell does not have to be held responsible for anything they do.

Dell does not care if you do not buy another computer from them, want to know why? Because their are over 300million people in American alone, not everyone knows what a joke dell is, yet...

  • hi, i have a question people & especially to Chris of Dell.

i purchase my m11x at best buy last october and now the left hinge is crack open and the screen is wobbling. my question is should i bring it to best buy (where i bought it which is 10min away from my place) to have it fix? i know they have service center there or should i contact dell customer service and have them fix it? thanks.

i should've seen this forum before i purchase that laptop. >:[

  • rhb13,

All Best Buy customers of Dell PCs should go to this site and register the PC into your name. Once this is submitted you will get an email saying the process is done. I am not sure how long that will take. Then, contact Dell Support. Explain the issue. They will setup a service to replace the LCD Assembly which includes the following -
LCD, back cover, hinges, LVDS cable, camera, microphone, LCD Bezel, brackets

  • 192 days old... pathetic...

  • Does one assume from this there may be a solution for R1 & R2 users????

I have no warranty, and while I believe this is a design fault and by should therefore be covered as such would be happy to pay for a fix just to have what I originally paid for. I live in Ausi what options are there for us???? Are you able to provide part numbers so we can at least order a replacement screen base.

  • Grungy, there is a fix for this if you are out of warranty.  Please see this thread
