I emailed Lionel with details of my problem with my out of warranty xps m1330 with an nvidia video card failure. I thought I would include you as well considering your past support - I apologize if you are no longer fielding these questions. Dell Support will not provide me with extended warranty coverage, despite theoretically being eligible until April 2010. They said my laptop was not shipped before November 2007, and therefore not eligible since it should not have a faulty part - but it still exhibits the same symptoms and failure as the others. I even ran through all of the testing, including holding down "D", testing for external monitor connection, etc. I can hear my computer boots fine, with the exception of the rainbow vertical lines with black/white background on the screen - rendering it useless... as well as other symptoms described in the post. I spoke to a support "floor manager", and he only offered to sell me another warranty for several hundred dollars. At this point, I've given up on being a future Dell customer unless something can be done. I think a $1200 computer failing in less than 1.5 years is ridiculous - and I've owned many, many dell computers in the past. I am not sure why the ship date should matter if the part and model match and I am experiencing the same issue as described by everyone else. All other details of my problem and calls are in my email sent on 10/29 to Lionel. Thank you for any advice you can provide. And Go Buffalo Bills!!!

XPS request

hey Todd,

My warranty expired last Feb 2009. Should this 1 year extended warranty be showing up on my account page under extended warranty? Its not,, even though the lap has been sent in after talking with online tech support about it. Thanks very much. Ken

Problem I'm having Dell still hasn't gotten my correct name for this lap. They still have the persons name that I bought it form. Who transferred the 1 year warranty left on to me, which expired last Feb. So talking to costurmer support about buying a extended warranty. they still say I can't because I'm not him even though I try to explaing it has been transferred to me. This has been going on for over a year now. So now I just say I'm him.. to make life easier to talk to someone.. But now that I would like to buy extended warranty. think this has to be straighten out first.. LOL..So, this has been kinda funny confusion.. But I now realize I may need a longer term warranty being this 8400 chip problem. I know this isn't Dells fault. But I would like to be protected as I love this M1330 and plan on keeping er for many years to come. I would feel allot better knowing I had extended warranty on it. Thanks again!

reply me

hey todd

Hi

I am Raj Rakesh from India. Service tag No. is 8SZP1BS.

I started having the exact same video/display issues that you
described in the article and that others described in their replies.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 purchased on 22nd May of 2008 with a
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 video card. I only had the 1-year warranty
which ended up on 22nd May of 2009 and the problem regarding the video
started to come from 10th June 2009.

According to your blog my laptop has also been covered under the 12
months extended warranty from Dell for this specific video problem.

But when I called to the people at Tech Support they didn't know
about 1-year warranty extension. They just refused about any such
extension.

I am completely disappointed by such an approach from well renowned Dell services.

Please suggest me where should I approach for getting the problem fixed.

It is my first blog which I had posted on 6th July. But till now I could not get my problem fixed.

They agreed to change my motherboard and did so. But just after replacement they put me in a lot bigger trouble. The system now could not boot up and gets overheated and shutdown automatically within a few seconds and sometimes displays an error code #M1004. So till now they have changed the motherboard thrice and still can not fix the problem. They have changed the RAM as well as the LCD.

Be it a faulty motherboard or a processor or mishandling during the replacement which caused it , the new problem is boarded by them as earlier it had no problem regarding over heating. But now they are telling that they are not responsible for it and recommending take warranty and then only they will fix it.

I have been under the mental trauma for last 6 weeks and its too much now.

Plese make me clear on the issue.

As I have written earlier, I am using a Vostro 1400 (Service Tag : 9z890g1) with an 128MB NVIDIA 8400M GS. And am having this no video or brown coloured bars issue, where the former case is the most expected. As I noted on my comment on the blog by Lionel, I did try and contact Dell India as I am currently in India who asked me to call Dell US. But, I had a negative reply from Dell US telling that my card is not on the list but as I can see from the post anf few other pages on the internet, it seems to be the 84 and the 86 series of NVIDIA which are causing this problem. Please do look into this issue and give me the procedural details.

Hello. I am seeking pieces of advice or solutions. I am starting to get really frustrated with my Dell XPS M1330, not to mention A LOT of bad experiences I read from online posts. I bought it 2008 and now, just a bit more than a year, I am experiencing too many problems with my Dellie. JUST right after the termination of its 1-year International Warranty.

First, the colors on the screen appear to be very strong, some colors became NEON GREEN, blue became very STRIKING BLUE, etc. I ran the diagnostics but everything’s ok. So I just darkened the screen to make it more eye-friendly. I couldn’t just take it to a repair shop directly since I was still using it for my lectures and every time I used an LCD projector with it, the colors projected appeared ok. So I guess maybe the problem’s not with the videocard, but with the flex cable. After a week of using it, I turned on my Dellie, used it even with its condition… but after a few minutes, WOW, the colors came back! And, that took like 3 mins! Thought everything’s ok already. But after that 3mins, everything went black!!! But I could see/notice the screen’s light still on and the computer’s still running. But again, I had no way of shutting it down properly so I just waited for the display to come back. It went back surprisingly.

In short, after experiencing all these, I went to a Dell Store. By the way, I am from the Philippines (though the unit was purchased in Dubai) and Dell Stores here do not accept any repairs. L Maybe it is high time that Dell reconsider that matter. It’s really one good factor for market pull. Especially now that it’s attracting a lot of buyers but most would really go for a local support. Anyway, I was referred to a laptop repair shop. After diagnosing my lappie, they said it’s not with the flex cable but with the LCD! They advised me to buy it from Dell and come back for installation. After 2 days of using my lappie with still a bad display on it, I decided to buy one. BUT, when I turned it on, nothing happened! The blue lights from the power icon to the multimedia icons when on and that’s it! Then, I again pushed the power icon then it went dead. So I let it rest for a day but still nothing happened.

Please help me. I do not want to just junk my Dellie. I spent a really good amount for this, I’m sure Dell won’t fail me. Not sure if all these rooted from the NVidia chip but I still am hoping that there’s a way for me to avail the extension of warranty.

THANKS. Hoping to get a reply.

Christine
