I don't have RAID setup (lots of people mentioned problems with it on these systems) and I haven't changed anything in that area at all. so I don't see how that could be part of the issue. As I mentioned earlier all other bootable CD/DVDs seem to work fine including the original 32 bit Vista recovery media from Dell and the retail 32 bit Windows 7 media (I didn't think to try the 64 bit retail Windows 7 update media by itself!) - it looks like this is going to remain a mystery for ever.

Are you setup in a Raid configuration? IF not you may need to go into the bios and set the SATA option to ATA vice AHCI. Note if you do this you will not be able to set up a dual boot or continue to use your current setup with out reinstalling all the OS's so don't do that unless you truly want a clean system

If you are in a RAID setup I am not familiar with all the nuances with RAID setups .

Re: Did Dell send me the wrong DVD?

Yes, I appreciate you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit, however the points I was most interested in getting feedback on were the ones about whether I might have been given a DVD that only worked on non-Intel processors, and also about the limited time I had to make a decision in on the booting process - any thoughts on those?

Which you know means having to reinstall all your progams again.

you can do a clean install with an upgrade disk see HERE for the steps.. and yes it works with win 7 I have done it twice on my two systems.

Re: Concerns about XPS M1710 laptop and heat problems

67°c is indeed quite high for a CPU, but not frighteningly hot, and certainly not high enough to endanger the CPU - or other components.

And 71°c is perfectly acceptable for a laptop graphics card.

I'll leave comments about the ACPI temperature to somebody who knows what they're talking about

As for a cooling pad: I use a NZXT Cryo LX these days - and a good job it does too, for my XPS M1730

But... they're probably the most expensive laptop cooler you can get, so I appreciate they're not for everybody

I used a slightly cheaper, but still very good Zalman ZM-NC1000 before that (my eldest son is now using it).

But even one of those will set you back some US$50 or so!

Unfortunately - I can't comment on any other notebook coolers, since those are the only two I've tried.

Do you have the laptop raised off the desk, to allow good airflow underneath it? That's the most important priority.

You could buy something specific for the purpose - like these 'Cool Feet'.

But I've read of folks just using an old book to raise the back. Basically anything which allows cooler air in under the laptop will help

XPS 1330 USB Device can perform faster

Ever since I had the mother board replaced on my system I continually get the error that the device can perform faster . Have been trying to get Product Key Numbers for Software that I purchased extra from Dell, but not much is happening on this subject. I am starting to wonder if I should have bought retail copy? I was thinking it would be nice to have everything on it from the beginning, but now realize that if I have to re-install, it will be hard without Product Key or Certificate of Authenticity. I guess I was just excited to get a newer computer and let that cloud my judgement. Have had some compatibility issues installing Games even after switching to the XP mode. Overall I am impressed with the 9000, time will tell the truth about this product.

XPS 720/730/730x owners

Do any of you still have your shipping box? Would you be willing to give it up and ship it to me if I pay for shipping?

Windows 7, not as rosy as it was made out to be.... I have had many issues along the way since I did a clean install of my upgrade on this 4 week old PC. eSATA worked incorrectly, until I updated the Intel Matrix and JMicron (not so obvious to find) drivers, then random drive corruption started, and I finally found that Win 7 doesn't like drives previously formatted by Acronis Disc Director - but instead of identifying that, it merilly started cross linking and corrupting files. Finally formatted the drive, and hope the problem will not return in 2 days again.

Now I have a new one. Since the Win7 installation, I frequently get 2 types of BSOD. The first, a STOP: 0x0000007F error that comes up from time to time (with no error description) - I was hoping this will go away now that the 'corrupt' drive is fixed, but it returned after about 2 days. More recently I have tried to un-install and re-install the Nvidia drivers, and also updated the Realtec network drivers from the manufacturer;s website (previously using default drivers included in Win 7, which were a few months older than Dell's, which in turn are few month's older than Realtec's), and things are quiet again.

The second, STOP 0x0000009F DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE occurs from time to time usually when resuming from sleep or during shutdown/restart (which would normally be after one or more 'sleep' cycles, as I normally put the PC to sleep). The problem appears identical to the one described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972109/en-us on the MS website - but that is claimed to be specific to Vista (oddly, I have not found any KBs that are actually related to the oh so perfect windows 7). A similar issues is also reported under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962201 .

Since the occurance is random, I have not been able to track down exactly what driver is causing it. The KBs mention USB devices, but I suspect the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 video card, as the Event Log tracks and error that the video card is reported to be "State 32" around the time of these failures. I have the latest video driver from Nvidia (191.07, Oct 5, 2009). MS won't help, because my win 7 installation is considered OEM - but the problem is 'current' in Vista, so could some one at Dell please follow up on this.

I also yesterday received a "BAD_POOL_CALLER" STOP 0x000000C2 error while burning a DVD using the built in Win 7 Image burner.

Lastly, my event log shows tons of CDROM errors (error creating pagefile, error reading - pagefile on the CD???)

Any help, or similar experience with Win7?

Thx

Re: Studio XPS 9000 Owners Sub-group

I took delivery of my XPS 9000 on Oct. 21, 2009 at @ 5:54PM
with great excitement. After waiting three (3) whole weeks and reading all the
experiences expressed on the now famous “Let me tell you about my wait” thread,
having my computer without any delays was much appreicated. Now, after having
and “tweaking” my “beast” I feel it is time to join the community and offically
become part of the Dell XPS family. It is indeed my pleasure to join the
numbers of those who know first hand the joy (and at times nightmare) of owning
a Studio XPS 9000.

The only real issue I have had with my system is the video
driver. It would at times freeze, reset, and then display a message in the
system tray:

”Display
driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered”

Three times the screen went blank and I had to do a hard
reboot to get the monitor working again. Researching the error message revealed
that this crash has been happening since @2007 with both Nvidia and Microsoft
blamed each other for the crash: not a good sign for GeForce GT220 owners.
However, not two days later did Nvidia post a new driver update and Dell
provide complete instructions on how to correctly remove and install the
drivers. This baby has been humming ever since with not one error related to
the video driver.

Updating to Windows 7 went without a wrinkle is my
experience. All the programs Windows wanted me to remove before installing was
not a problem, as well reinstalling them once the installation was complete. I
have been enjoying both the pleasure of my XPS 9000 running Windows 7 with my
only regret is having to get off the machine due to lack of sleep or some other
pesky responsibility we humans have to put up with. This machine is like a
dream come true for this writer; for those waiting for their machine I can only
offer my happiness with what Dell has produced with the aid of other hardware
components.

Yes, there are problems with the unit, but so what; this
beauty is here to “git er done”, and she is doing just that. I will post my full specs later,
just wanted to jump in and add my name to the list. I do look forward to
sharing experiences and knowledge of what little I know. Again, the pleasure is
all mine…

It was posted in another forum, link of which I thought I had kept, but it didn't save in my favourites,

Solution was

Turn off computer, take power lead out of box, hold start button of PC for 30 seconds and then plug poweer back in and restart computer, sure enough this fixed this issue.

This would also explain why over the last few months whether I have been web browsing, playing a game or listening to amusic, that a move of my USB wirless mouse, would lock up the system. This USB controller.,

Now I reported this to Dell support and someone else replied and the informaiton he told me, was very similar to what I had done. It is.

"Dis-charge Startup the system
    - Remove the AC Adapter from the system
    - Remove the battery from the system
    - Press the power button for 10 seconds
    - Insert the battery and AC Adapter back into the system
    - Try to start the system and take note of the performance"

He said this in relation to a laptop, good grief, don't they read emails, I was talking about a XPS Desktop, sheesh!!

I am not 100% confident problem is fixed, as earlier this evening, I heard the noise you get when hardware is install, when I logged back into my Vista drive after about an hour or so of none use.

It does concern my Mainboard might be going to go one of these days, although I have not found out if USB on board controlelr is actually on MB, but I would assume so.

Of course if this USB controler totoaly packs up, I have Blue tooth keyboard etc and of course my monitors have USB inputs.

Actually I may use BT keyboard / mouse over the next few days and see.

I hope this may help others and any input from other XPS users, I would like to hear.

Cheers Phil

About 2 weeks ago, I lost the ability to control Lights on the front and back etc of my 730 and fans got stuck on 55%,

After trying the usual suggestions from Dell tech, Bios update etc, an Engineer came out last Saturday and replaced the Master I/O board and that solved that problem, but what I had noticed and even though I reported the following error from the Dell diagnsotic I was asked to do for fan problem, the one you do at boot F12 option, it reported Error 6500:041b , USB controller not generating Interupts. Both Dell tech and Enginner didn't know what to make of that,. Well I now feel I know what it may be, if I disable the USB controller in the Bios, the system loads the bios screen as fast as normal, but of course I do not have any USB devices in Windows. If I leave it enabled, it takes a good minute or two to get past bios screen.

I have reported this to Dell Tech, and they tell me because I have just had a engineer out, I have to wait for 7 days until another one, now my warranty is toplevel, 24/7 support, next business day onsite. Why do I have to wait 7 days. I am cocnerned this is a problem they may be indicating a Mainboard issue and explain why this system randolmy restarts itself no matter what I am doing.

To add, until Vista Device Manager, I see one USB device not fully installed, it is called "USB mass Stoarge Device - Universal Serial Bus controllers. Error msg is

his device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I check for solution and Windows says drivers cannot be installed.

I am running Vista 64 bit, but problem was also there under 32bit version and is also there under my other drive, WIndows 7 64bit

I would imagine windows cannot install driver etc, as the problem is Hardware related, but I cannot say for sure.

Where is the USB controller, is it on the motherboard?

Any thoughts or suggestions please reply.

Thanks

Phil

As I mentioned I had no trouble with any other CDs - do you think the CD I was sent is made for machines with an AMD processor rather than an Intel one, and that made the difference (not sure that this makes sense, but maybe it does). By the way, although the CD says Vista Ultimate on it I don't think that is the problem - don't all these Vista CDs contain the full code base and you install what you have a license key for?

Are you aware of anywhere i could find a list of the part numbers for the CD I have so that I could see it 'in context' so as to speak, and then work out whether I had the wrong one - I don't suppose there is much point trying to ask Dell now that my machine is out of warranty.

You made an interesting suggestion about just trying to boot from the Windows 7 64 bit upgrade CD, and then supplying the Vista HP key when asked to do a clean install - I didn't think about that - I did a clean Vista 32 bit install in another partition and then did the Windows 7 32 bit upgrade, which seems to have worked fine although its taken me about 24 hours to reinstall everything and find all the old license keys! Right now I'm not sure I want to go through it all again just to try 64 bit, and perhaps find some of my stuff does not work - I would have done it the other way round and then backed it off it I had a problem, but after all the hassle I'm not sure.

I have some CD/DVD's that require that I hit a key and others that do not. I have never figured out why it does that.

Now for your question on the version, if you bought the Windows 7 Home Premium then yes you need to have the Vista Home Premium 64 to do the upgrade. So yes they sent you the wrong disk. If you want to swap the Ultimate disk for a Home Premium disk let me know as I have extras. I try to keep extra copies of each OS around here and I think that is about the only one that I do not have.

I think though that you should be able to boot from the Windows 7 DVD and select a custom install and it will wipe your drive and start fresh, it will ask you for your Vista key which is on a multi colored sticker usualy on the back or side of your computer. I always use a full version and never do and upgrade, I just do not like the idea that if there is any problem in what is there that it will move to the new install.
