Corrupted BIOS

I have a XPS 435 (June of 09). I was updating to windows 7, update went fine, windows updates went OK, then I went out to the Dell site to update my drivers. One of the recommended updates was to the BIOS to make it more compatable with Windows 7. I began the update but my computer locked up at the 1% point. After waitng for qite a while I tried rebooting. The computer is now totally non functional, nothing but a black screen. Is there any way to recover from this (short of sending it back to Dell)?

Re: Corrupted BIOS

No;  the mainboard needs to be replaced if the flash has failed.

Re: Corrupted BIOS

Since your system is still under warranty, call Dell and they will send you a new motherboard and schedule a tech to come out and replace it.

Re: Corrupted BIOS

Hallo,

it is not necessary to replace the complete motherboard. There are specialists who can unmount the BIOS chip and reflash the BIOS chip with the right firmware.

Costs: about 40 Euro (for unmountig, flashing and remounting)

For example in Germany: www.bios-fix.de

Look if there is a similiar service in your country.

Another option: Maybe this link helps you:

While this is true, it does void the warranty on your motherboard. As you are probably still under warranty, the supported (non-warranty voiding) method is to call Dell support, explain what happened and they should replace the motherboard.

Re: Corrupted BIOS

Yes, you are right.

If you still have warranty, contact DELL.

My suggestion was for case you don't have warranty any more.
