Could not copy disc

I have an inspiron 530 with vista home premium edition 32 bit.  My DVD/CD rom is hl-dt-st dvd+-rw  GSA-H31N ATA.  I use Roxio Creator DE to copy my DVDs.  I've updated everything.  Here's my problem it will not copy on to Sony DVD+R discs, it just makes a lot of background noises and Roxio seems to freeze up and I have to restart to even get the disc out.  Once in a while I get a successful copy, I've tried lowering the burning speed but that didn't solve anything.  Is there anything else I can do to make this work?  These are the only DVD+R I've ever tried, I usually use DVD-R with such brands as TDK, HP, FujiFilm and they all work fine.  I just have this big stack of Sony disc I would like to be able to use.  If this is just a compatibility issue is there a list somewhere of brands my drives are compatible with so I could avoid this problem in the future?

Thanks.

Hi, bach_ngoc17:

I'm sure you're aware that Sony does not make DVD+R discs. They're made by a contract manufacturer for Sony, who brands them. In order to tell who actually manufactured your discs, go grab DVD Identifier (link below). Run that with a blank disc in the drive and post the media code for me.

Re: Could not copy disc

Ok, so we've learned two things. First, your drive can read those discs. Second, you actually have discs made by Sony. So that would seem to point to the program you are using to burn discs, Roxio.

Let me suggest an alternative program called ImgBurn. Go get that and let's see if it can burn files to your DVD blanks. You should not need to uninstall Roxio.

Re: Could not copy disc

I've tried ImgBurn already and it acts the same way as Roxio with these discs.

Thanks.

Re: Could not copy disc

Ok, that's definitely a clue. This could be something as simple as deleting the upper/lower filters.

Let's try this. Uninstall Roxio (just make sure you have the disc to reinstall it). Then go to the CD/DVD FAQ (link below) and follow the instructions under "code 39 error". Then reinstall the program. I suggest you DO NOT install DLA or Drag-to-disc, whatever packet writing program comes with that Roxio version.
