I have a XPS M1730 which originally had Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I purchased a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade that ships with both 32 & 64 bit versions. My preference is to go to 64 bit as I now have 4G of RAM. The 64 bit version wasn't accepted so I upgraded using the 32 bit disk, which required a clean install through windows. Now running Windows 7 I again attempted to change to 64 bit, but on clicking setup receive an error message that the file version is not consistent with the version of windows.
Can anyone please advise how to proceed.
Thanks
You can't "upgrade" from a 32 bit to 64 bit. You will have to do a complete new install of the 64 bit version. You will also need Dell 64 bit device drivers.

I took a vista 32 machine to a Win 7 64 bit machine. You have to save all of your files: Docs, e-mail, picturs ect. on an external drive. Once your sure you have everything saved away from your current system, go to set up and change to boot from CD. Installl the 64 bit cd and do a clean install of 64 bit, it works, it just takes the time to save all your data to an external drive then reload your dat back and then reinstall your programs.
