Vostro 1400 Upgrade To Windows 7 (32) Successful

For anyone wondering if a Vostro 1400 can be upgraded to Windows 7 the answer is yes!  I started with XP Home which came with the laptop and then purchased Vista Home Premium which came with a FREE upgrade to Windows 7.  The Vista upgrade went smoothly.  I had downloaded all the Vista drivers and applications from the Dell support site (32 bit) prior to the upgrade.  After the Vista upgrade I ran the upgrades to restore functionality to the onscreen sound and brightness controls.  Didn't have to load any of the other downloads though as Vista had all drivers necessary.  I then ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and followed the guidance it gave.  Once I received the Windows 7 upgrade, I loaded it from start to finish in a couple of hours.  I virtually only had to click on a couple of choices at the start and enter the product key and let it run.  I rebooted several times during the process, but concluded with Windows 7 fully functioning.  I then ran the Windows Update to get all the latest updates for Win 7.  I had already updated my Norton IS 2009 to a free upgrade to 2010 so that didn't require any attention.  I also am running Norton Ghost 14 and it had not issues.  I'm running Norton Utilities too, which did have a free update once I finished and now works with Win 7 too.  All Vosto original functionality is still there and working just fine.  Even the WiFi finder button and Media Direct button work fine.  Everything seems much snappier and responsive and networking is MUCH faster between networked PC's.  Setting up a Home Group was a snap.  Even my sound is better and without the annoying scratchyness.  All in all, it was a very easy process and only cost me the $120 for the Vista upgrade with FREE Win 7 which came with both 32 and 64 bit DVD.  Of course I could have done a 32 bit clean install for that matter, but I chose the in-place upgrade as I didn't want to reinstall or loose any applications I already had running.  Overall it was easier and most likely quicker to do this than to look for software and installation keys and reconfigure everything from scratch which a clean install would have required me to do.  Just thought any Vostro 1400 owners might like to know this is possible.  Good luck!

Thanks for the info.  A couple of questions.  What wireless card do you have?  You said it works, but I am not sure I have the same Dell card.

Also, I do not have Vista.   Have you done any research that describes if a clean installation of W7 will work on the Vostro 1400?

Thanks!

I have the Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini Card.  I haven't found much info at all on upgrading my Vostro 1400 to Win 7 clean install or otherwise.  That's why I made this post.  I would think as long as you follow the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to prepare and also download all the drivers and applications for Vista for your Vostro 1400 that you will be OK with the upgrade.  The Vista drivers and applications should work in Win 7 if you needed them, but download them in advance and burn to a CD/DVD.  I didn't need them, but I already had Vista running. That's why I bought the Vista upgrade with the FREE Win7.  It made the process much more likely to be successful and I didn't have to worry about compatible drivers and applications or reinstalling applications where moving from XP directly to Win 7 may require installing the Vista drivers and apps and requires reinstalling all your applications.  There wasn't any help on doing what your are wanting to do i.e.. clean install, but I can attest that the XP to Vista to Win7 process worked for me.  Good luck!
