924 All-in-One Printer - Windows 7

Hi.  I am new to this community.  I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 because my desktop computer crashed.  I have 924 Printer.  I looked up a compatibity list for Windows 7 and says that it was not compatible.  Does it mean that I cannot use this printer at all with my new laptop physically connected or wireless?  I have a router and my laptop has wireless network.  My printer still works and I would like to continue to use it if I can.

Re: 924 All-in-One Printer - Windows 7

myamajo,

I would try disconnecting the printer, running the patch, it may or may not work. Then Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer. The install the Vista drivers and see if it works. Windows 7 is supposed to be backward compatible.

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Re: 924 All-in-One Printer - Windows 7

Rick:  Thank you for your reply.  I tried to remove the driver.  But I get a message saying "Unable to remove Dell Photo AIO Printer 924, x64, Type 3 - User Mode Driver.  The specified printer driver is currently in use."  I am not sure what is causing this message.  I disconnected the printer from my laptop and turned off the printer too.

When I select the printer under the Server properties, it asks for Remove Driver only or Remove Driver and Driver Package.  I selected Driver Only.  Is that correct?

Thank you for your help on this.

Re: 924 All-in-One Printer - Windows 7

Mami,

That's a different error message. Maybe try start, control panel, printers, right click on your printer, if listed and put the printer offline.

Under server properties, it should remove the drivers only. It probably has some type of generic driver that might not work.

When you go to install the Vista Driver, you might have to use the compability mode to install it. Not quite sure what that is yet, since I do not have Windows 7 installed on my computer. I heard this helps a lot to use the compatibility mode.

Rick:

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I checked a status of the printer.  It is already "offline."  I still have the same message about removing the driver.  Any other suggestion?

Re: 924 All-in-One Printer - Windows 7

Mami,

Try restarting your computer. With the printer disconnected, try running the patch and see if it works with removing the printer.

The try installing the Vista Drivers using the compatibility mode. If that doesn't work, then try using Windows updates and see Windows Updates has a driver for you to install.
