Matshita DVD+-RW UJ-857G ATA Device and memory card reader slot

I am having problems with my CD/DVD drive and the memory card reader slot.  The DVD drive shows up under Computer and when I check the device manager, it says it is working properly.  When I insert a CD or DVD, it does nothing.  When I go to computer, and then double click the drive, it does nothing.  It acts as if there isn't anything in the drive....yes, i have a cd with photos on it in the drive.   I have tried multiple cd's as well.

I also have a memory stick in the card reader and the pop up that says it's installing the driver works and says it was installed and it's showing up under Computer as well, but when i double click on it, it says to insert a disk into Memory Stick Pro (F:).  The memory card is inserted.  I inserted the memory card on my other laptop and it works fine.

I thought I had driver issues, so I restored my computer back to the original factory settings and they still are not working.  When I try to update the driver for the DVD it says it is up to date.   Any suggestions?

I guess I should have added, I am running a XPS M1330.

Hi, amyjomckinney:

First, your DVD should be tested using the Dell diagnostics. Boot the computer and hit F12, then pick the utility partition. Pick Custom test, then run the READ test on your drive with a data disc in the drive. Let me know if the test passes or fails and any error codes.

Second, the memory stick. Keep in mind that there are many versions of these things. Your system can read memory stick and pro, but may not be able to read the newer types.
