Latitude D510 BIOS says battery is 100% but XP says it is 0%. Battery light flashes 4-orange 1-green. Battery won't charge.

Tried to get most of the facts into the subject line.

I have an original Dell battery and a replacement compatible one, but they both show the same symptoms.  The laptop will not run at all (not even for a second) without the mains adaptor connected.  While it is running on mains the battery light flashes 4-orange and 1-green and I’ve left it powered up for 48 hours in the hope that the battery will get the idea and start charging, but no luck.  I’ve tried running it with the battery removed for a while but still no change.  The battery display in Windows XP shows “0%, charging” but if you interrupt the boot-up and get the BIOS to show the battery state it shows 100%. If you remove the battery the BIOS display immediately reports it has been removed, and shows 100% charged a couple of seconds after you replace it.  While running on mains the brick in the mains adaptor gets a little warm as does the panel next to the battery on the underside of the laptop, but that's only to be expected.  The battery never gets warm.

I wonder if there is a way to tell the BIOS that the battery is not charged at all, so it will allow it to get charged ?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Do you have the most current BIOS installed. You can check your BIOS version by hitting F2 at boot and entering setup. You can check for the current BIOS by clicking on Support at the top of this page and then click on Drivers and Downloads and enter the model number of the computer you have. CLick on the OS you have and then BIOS. The most current is A04.

If you do a BIOS update, make sure that you enter BIOS setup and "load setup defaults" and then "save and exit"

To the responders so far:  Many thanks for a quick response.

I've now upgraded the BIOS, including load defaults and save/exit.  The symptoms are still the same, irrespective of which battery I try.

The power meter in XP shows Current Power Source: AC Power.    Total battery power remaining: 0% (charging) and has done so fior the last 2 hours.  The BIOS still shows battery 100% charged.  The battery light still flashes as before.

Is it significant that the battery does not change temperature while it is (supposed to be) charging ?
