Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

I have an Inspiron 1526 laptop and recently the sound has stopped working.  I tried going to the dell website and downloading the motherboard, but it didnt work.  I also tried going into the device manager and letting it search for an update, but it came up with nothing.  What's wrong with my computer?  Any suggestions on how to fix this problem.  When I try to play anything it can't even find the driver to play it.

Try listening through headphones and see if you hear audio through the output jack.

If you have the current audio driver it is Sigmatel, version 6.10.0.5614, A02. The folder on the hard drive that contains the driver's files is named R170217. Go to

c\dell\drivers\R170217 and delete that folder. Look through all of the R folders there and delete any that have a sub-folder named WDM.

Then download and install the Sigmatel R170217 driver.

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

I tried listening to my headphones, but still nothing.  The computer comes up with an error everytime you try to play sound no matter what program.  I tried playing music on my Itunes, and the error said it wasn't connecting to the device, same with Windows media.  When I go into Windows sounds and try to test them, an error comes up that says attempt failed.  I followed your instructions and deleted the folders and downloaded, re installed, and restarted my computer.  Still nothing.  In my toolbar, when you click the sound, it used to pop up with a mixer, now it only shows two tabs for Windows sound and speakers/headphones, both are up all the way.  Still no sound.  Any other suggestions?

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

If you have recently reinstalled Vista that could be a factor.

Also you could have a hardware problem. Try running the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics. These interactive audio tests are designed to narrow down the problem to either the software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if those are working correctly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

1. Restart the computer and tap the f12 key as soon as it starts to boot up .
2. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests (PSA) before Dell Diagnostics starts. During the PSA you will hear some tones through the system speaker but this does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the PSA.
3. Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one.
4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. (At this point - after you have opened Dell Diagnostic custom - if you can't find the option to select the audio tests that is a symptom of a failed audio chip.)
5. The tests will run. Alternate between using headphones and listening to speakers in case only one signal path is working.
The tests will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it.
6. If you don't hear the music during the test it definitely means there is a hardware failure somewhere in the system. In this case Dell will repair the computer if it is still under warranty.
7.If you do hear the audio during the test but not when you boot back into Windows, that almost always means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the audio driver or with Windows.
8. Error codes: If you answer 'no' to any question that the test asks you, the test generates an error code that can tell a Dell technician that you answered 'no' to that question. The test does not know the exact component that has gone bad. Before answering 'no' to a question, make note of the circumstances at that point so you will know in general what the error code means.

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

Ok, so I hit F12 and choose the diagnostics option.  It began running the Pre-Assessment.  It did color and there were stripes on the screen.  It asked me if I saw them, I replied yes.  It then began running through some memory tests, then the computer went blank and shut down.  I did this three times, and everytime it shut down after the memory test.  When I restarted the diagnostics, it began beeping a lot and an error message came up before it would continue.  Error code 0146  Msg: Error code 2000-0146.  My computer is not still under warranty.  It expired a few days ago.  Imagine my luck.

Here is a link to the official explanation of the error code. To get more help with the test you might need to go to one of the other boards.

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

i tried to say that: ur reply was like professional software/hardware engineer. that i tried to explain in my words.

i have 2 problems in my Dell Inspiron 6400. the problem are below:

1) DVD Write: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GSA-T11N ATA Device is not reading disk or write??

2) RAM Upgrad probelm:

My Notebook RAM is: DIMM_B, Capacity: 512 Mb, Speed: 667 MHz

DIMM_A, Capacity: 512 Mb, Speed: 667 MHz

There are only 2 Slots in my Notebook and my limit is only 2GB. I want to upgrade my RAM Memory. I visited Dell Website and saw there 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) Memory Module Kit for Dell Inspiron E1505/6400 Notebooks, Speed: 800 MHZ.

Can I use that 800 MHZ Speed DDR2 DIMM RAM instead of my 667 MHZ speed DDR2 DIMM RAM??

thanks in Advance

Thanks in Advance

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

deadlock44,

Sorry, I was joking around. Thank you for the compliment. I understand your concern about the memory speed. Here is what Dell says about it:

Memory offered now may differ in speed from the original system memory but has been qualified to work in the system. When mixed, the memory will perform at the lowest speed populated or the highest speed allowed by the system.

If you prefer to use 667 MHz memory you can buy it from Crucial and other sellers.

Try posting your optical drive question on the Disk Drives (HDD, CD/DVD, Blu-ray) Board.

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

ok thanks for ur reply n joiking.

the advise u gave me, i know tht. tell me will only 880 bus speed RAM will work well instead of 667 speed RAM in my inspiron 6400 notebook or there some restriction in hardware also between RAM n Motherboard slot in my series.

thanks in Advance

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

I am sorry but I do not completely understand the question. The RAM has to be 200 pin, 1.8 volts SODIMM DDR2.

Normally I would say to stick with 667MHz, but since Dell guarantees that its 800 MHz will work then I guess it is okay to use. That is really all I know about it.

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook now have 512MB*2  MB(667speed, 200 pin, 1.8 volts, pci-5300,DIMM SD DDR2<all thoses i know well>) in 2 slot <coz i guess it has 2 slot only each capacity 1 GB>.

But i have 512*2 MB (667speed)in 2 slot. if i go for 667 speed again then i'll use 1 GB n my another 512MB n the other 512 MB will no work.

i wanna know will 800 Speed  RAM<no 667 speed> work in with my motherboard properly?? thts all.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Inspiron 1526 Sound Driver

Dell says it will work and guarantees that it will. But you have to add two 1 GB ram modules to get any benefit. I don't think your model supports a 1 GB in one slot and a 512 in the other. I might be wrong but I believe you can have a total of 1 GB or 2 GB, but not 1.5 GB.

If you need to discuss this anymore please start a new thread. We are too far off-topic here.
