Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

my Dell 948 AIO printer has not worked since installation of Windows 7. It continually states communication not available. I have done everything that pudge has recommended and more. It appears as though Dell dropped the ball and there is a compatibility issue even though they say there isn't Unfortuantely, theer is not support or anything from Dell Any help would be appreciated. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, disconneced power and USB  and still same issue. My computer is Dell inspirion 530, dual core, 4GB Ram.

MininCa,

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java

I recommend that you use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings to get the best communications between the printer and all the computers.(This printer can be used wirelessly if the printer has the wireless card)

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. It may or may not work. If it doesn't work, then try...

Manual Printer Driver Removal

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista/Windows 7  32-bit Drivers

Vista/Windows 7 64-bit drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

Also try reading...

Choose your printer. Beneath your printer, select your operating system. You'll be redirected to another page. Then click on show all steps. It will walk you through the installation process.

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

thanks for the information, but I have been following all of the threads on this same issue and have tried everything that you have written and nothing works. The only thing that I omitted was that my printer is a USB connection. I even unloaded and reinstalled the dell drivers dated 10/2/09, and it still does't work. The only thing that I can think off after reading all of the posts here is that Dell screwed up big time and apparently isn't going to assist anyone. With everyone having the same problem after  installing Windows 7 that appears to be the problem. I appreciate the help, but I have done everything as stated above, numerous times.

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

MininCa,

What virus protection, firewalls and security suites are you using?

Does Windows 7 have a UAC? If so, did you try turning it off for installation?

Windows 7 is supposed to be backward compatible. Is there a compatibility wizard or something similar to try running?

Did you install the latest chipset drivers? Download and install EVEREST Home Edition. Click on computer, summary and look for anything in blue. The chipset drivers should be blue, left click on it then click update drivers, it should take you to the proper website to download the drivers. See if that helps.

You'll have to run the patch and also manually remove the printer drivers. Then restart your computer. The try installing the proper drivers.

***To install drivers, sometimes the file unzips and does nothing. You have to look for the setup.exe file, right click on it, then left click run as administrator***

You'll be prompted to connect the printer (powered on).

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

I am using Norton Internet Security 2010 and was using it with vista before upgrade and no problem

Turned off UAC no difference.

I tried windows backwards compatibility, but since the dell printer is .LNK and not .exe, will not work. Keeps saying has to be an .exe program.

Everything is updated including bios, chipset drivers, everthing, and still does not work.

I moved printer to another older machine that has XP on it and it works fine, so problem is windows 7 and the 948 I guess.

If any other ideas come to mind will appreciate it and will try. At this point, I am ready to toss my 948 and buy an HP.

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

Hey Rick:

Thanks but that doesn't work. Its for 2007 and I am running 2010. Also, the first people that I went to, when I first experienced this problem was symantic, and they went over eveything, and it wasn't the security software. Also, I was running 2010 way before I installed windows 7. There has to be a correlation between Dell's Drivers or lack of and Microsoft Window 7's installation. I will keep struggling until it is figured out, but I do appreicate the assistance that you have provided me and others who are having the same problem.

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

MininCa,

I read in another thread, someone suggested, I usually don't recommend this, using Windows Updates to install their printer. Doubtful but might just work.

Take you for the compliment and take care. Sorry but Windows 7 is hit and miss. The ones I find not on the list are installing and the ones that are on the list are not!

Re: Communication problem between computer and dell printer 948 AIO Since windows 7 installation.

I think after this I am through with Dell and any Dell products. Nothing but trouble and little if any support. I still essentially have a new printer that won't work because evidently due to bad software and drivers that Dell has not updated. What is worse, there is no way to contact any one at Dell to have their drivers made compatibable. I would hire someone, but will probably be cheaper to toss the printer and buy another: this time epson or hp.

How do you go about doing that. I have never heard of it.
