V E R Y S L O W Dimension 8300 after xp reinstalled from retail XP cd....

My friend gave me his Dimension 8300 as his hard drive crashed and he bought a new computer.  I figured I have plenty of drives around so off we went.

From the asset tag I can confirm that other than the original hard drive, the system is as it shipped from Dell.

I put in a 160GB SATA drive to which I proceeded to install XP Pro SP3 off of my own legitimate copy.  After many, many hours, windows was installed.  However, it takes 10 minutes to fully boot, once booted, it can take minutes between mouse click to action taken.  I can not get the exclamation points to clear from Multimedia Audio Controller or Video Controller though installed drivers from Dell website.

Would like to use the machine as it is perfect for my wife to have.

Do I have to have the original Dell restore cd to accomplish this (as original hdd is toast)?

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Did you follow the correct sequence when installing OS to brand new hard drive? You might have forgotten Desktop System Software and the chipset.

Latitude D400 - XP Pro / Ubuntu 9.10 dual boot

Latitude 110L - XP Pro

Dimension B110 - XP Home

Dimension 4100 - Windows 2000 / Ubuntu 9.10 dual boot

IBM Thinkpad 600E - Puppy Linux 4.1retro

Magnavox H2160MW9 DVD recorder with 250GB hard drive and digital tuner

JVC DMR10 DVD recorder with analog tuner

jfl330,
Make sure OS Install Mode is set to Off in BIOS.

I did not install the DSS, I will later.

However, why should it take many hours just for the XP Pro install from the retail CD?  That 39 minutes takes more like 4 - 5 hours.

Thanks!

Have you tried resetting the CMOS?

If for some reason the cache is turned off, ordinary tasks will take much, much longer.

Are you saying the XP installation stalled with 34 minutes remaining?

That's a known issue... Typically caused by issues with a USB device. Did you disconnect all USB peripherals except mouse and keyboard during the installation?

And one more thing...

Run BIOS setup and make sure the CPU speed option is set to Normal, not to Compatible. Save the change, if any, and exit setup.

There does not appear to be DSS available for the Dimension 8300.  Does this make the installation steps any different?

Is there some other utility to use?

Thanks!

I believe I found the problem.  I need Windows XP Home Original Release in order to install the chipset drivers.  I have the Dell box with the CD Key on it.

Is there anyway to get a copy of Windows XP Home Origional Edtion?

Re: V E R Y S L O W Dimension 8300 after xp reinstalled from retail XP cd....

Huh?

You don't need the XP CD to install chipset drivers. You can download the chipset driver here. You can download it on any PC and transfer it over to the 8300's desktop, if the 8300 can't get on line. Boot the 8300 in Safe Mode (F8 before XP starts to load). Double-click on the chipset file and reboot normally when it''s done.

If you're in the US, you can request one set of replacement disks for this system for free from Dell here.

jfl330,
You've asked why it should take many hours for XP to install from the retail CD but haven't told us whether the OS Install Mode is set to Off or CPU speed option is set to Normal in BIOS. Either of these being on a different setting would cause the issue.
