dimension 2400 no startup!!

Hi   i have a dell dimension 2400. it died a while back and it has been in storage for almost a year.  well i have decided to try and fix it. now i called dell support when the problem first happened.  my computer suddenly died when i was upgrading versions i tell them which i was from xp home to pro. i told them that my computer would not even start up. the picture never came up or anything.   they said it was the motherboard. but when i hit the power button i get a green light on the motherboard!! now i am a new technician in training. trying to learn all i can. and i don't know a whole lot about motherboards yet but i think it is kinda obvious that a green light is good!?!? am i right??  on the front panel i have 2 lights next to the power button.  the one on the right is green and on the left is yellow. i think it is the cpu. maybe i blew that up or something. i don't know.  but please help me out because i am constantly upgrading computers and will be able to get a processor for it if that is the case. but if it is the moboard then i will not bother.   just buy a new computer.  thanks in advance  please respond. i will be on here daily checkin so if you need a response keep checkin back plz.  thanks

Re: dimension 2400 no startup!!

The green light on the motherboard only means that it's getting power from the power supply. Is the power button green or amber, steady or blinking?

There are 4 diagnostic LEDs on the rear of the tower. If not all green, look up the error codes here.

After a year in storage, it's likely the motherboard battery is dead, so you may need to replace that before you can do any trouble-shooting. And while you're inside the case, blow out all the dust bunnies, and carefully reseat the RAM modules and PCI cards in their slots.

If you are comfortable working around computers, you could try the following:

Note: The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a know working power supply.

Unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 20-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system, if power supply's fan and the hard drive runs, then the PSU should be good.

Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.

Power supply checks out and the system still does not work, again remove the power cord, hold the power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power, reconnect the 20-pin connector to the motherboard.

Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.

If you do not get any beep codes and/or there is no change in the diagnostic lights, then it would appear that the motherboard has died.

They are located on the back panel, between the PS-2 ports [mouse & keyboard] and the parallel port connector.

If you follow the procedure and the mobo is dead you can find one fairly cheap. I replaced one and it is pretty easy. Then I bought the a faster CPU  and a little memory and it works great. My son uses every day. It will not be good for games though.

 Acer Aspire6930: Intel Core 2 Du0Processor
 800 fsb 4gig ram 2mb L2 cache) 250 gb hdd
16.9 Widescreen hd Acer CneCystal LCD
DVD Super Multi DL, 802.11 Draft N
True 5.1 surroundsound subwoofer HDMI out
  Dell Optiplex GX280: Pentium 4 ( 2,8 ghz, 4 gig ram 800 fsb)

  DVD -RW, 21 widescreen monitor

Not necessarily -- it may be that the power supply has failed.

You have not mentioned the power button LED, is it solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber, or off?

Have you checked the power supply and motherboard, using the procedure I posted?

Re: dimension 2400 no startup!!

the 2 lights on the front next to the power button.  the one on the right is green for a while  after a few hours of running it turns off but the one on the left is solid amber.   the light on the mobo is solid green.  it is located near the 24 pin plug but not right next to it but someone said before that means the power suipply is good
