Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

Hi All,

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 I received a few days ago.
I have the "clicking" noise from my hard drive. This problem was already analyzed, and the root cause is the Seagate hard Drive.
See the complete post about it:http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19248285/19395113.aspx

There is a firmware update that is supposed to fix this.
The file is called: R211337.EXE and it can be downloaded from here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_E6400&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Under SATA Drives -> Seagate - Hardware

I have downloaded the file to my PC. It runs a self extract that creates: "Seagate Utility.iso"
I then burned this onto a CD, inserted to the E6400 drive and rebooted.

The problem is that the upgrade does not work.
I am getting the following output (I omitted the Serial number of the Drive):
"
Binary Download
Attempting to read binary file: DE17.LOD
Invalid data
Resetting device...
Model ST9250410ASG SN
Exit With Code 0
"

I have tried burning it on another PC, used a few types of burning software and a few drives. Nothing helped.

Note:
I know for sure that my drive is ST9250410ASG  (ran the Seagate diagnose utility from Windows XP)

I don't have a floppy drive.

Any help would be much appreciated!
John

Contact Support and have them replace the drive or replace the whole computer. You should not have to update the firmware on a new computer.

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

I am having the same problem. I h ear the clicking noise but can't narrow it down definitly to the hd. It might be something loose inside. The clicking is intermittent and I can't make it start it just comes and goes.

Dell said they would send me a new hd but I hate to replace a brand new drive with one that is refurbished. I did tell them if they did I wanted it to be an image of win7 and my not have to install any drivers, for it to have the recovery image on it just as if it were new. We will see what happens.

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

I am not near the laptop so can't give you the exact number of the seagate drive in it but I think it is the same as yours. Definitly a st9xxxx. Dell tech is supposed to call me back and let me know if it is possible to replace the drive with one that has the same dell image as a new computer drive with windows 7 after it comes out Oct.22. It is bad enough I have spent hours and hours on 3 different computers they sent that they should do something on this problem.

First computer had wrong hd 5200 rpm instead of 7200. Second computer was supposed to be new and was a refurb which they deny to this day except 2 techs told me it was a refurb. It had 2 other personal files in it besides mine. Also had macros in it. Third computer would not connect to the internet except at a snails pace unless It was hooked to the adapter. A tech also told me that one was a refurb when I pressured them about it and customer service said it was new. I don't know how many times I was told something  questionable which is against the law about new vs refurb. I can only go by what the techs told me when I asked if new or refurb. If something is refurb the company has to disclose that. There was nothing on the box or computer when I got it or the packing slip other then saying exchange. I know from past experience exchange usually means refurb. which is why I made a point with customer service on insisting they replace a new computer with a new computer since I never even opened the box the first computer came in. I read the packing slip first and found the error on it. It went back immediately.

The one I have is fast, fine and I am enjoying it except when it makes the clicking sound which is intermittent. I don't want a refurb hd so will have to see what the tech says after Oct. 22.

It appears that the days of Dell keeping a buyer happy and standing up to their claim quality products is no more.

Actually, since there have been so many complaints all of which identify the clicking sound of the seagate drives Dell should recall them and replace with another drive.

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

Let us know what the outcome is.

Be prepared when you call them with facts. Have posts from this board and the internet (google it) sitting in front of you to quote to them so they will know that you are aware of this along with many others.

If you get no satisfaction from the tech insist that you want to speak with a supervisor. I have had them hang up on me before when I do this and I just call right back. Get the name of the person and any id he/she can give you when you first start talking to them since many do not document your call on your documentation of call ins.

I didn't have time to call them. But I've found this advice: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=168425&highlight=clicking+noise

I'll try it this evening.

It is not working for ST9250410ASG :(

I've also tried to use hdparam and I've set acustic param to 254 and clicking still exists when drive is in idle!!!!

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

I'm having the exact same problem. Dell Latitude E6400 laptop with ST9250410ASG . Changing acoustic mode doesn't work. The support person said in chat that they wanted to send me 5 refurbished drives which is unacceptable. Calling them right now instead of using that chat feature. Should be interesting!

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

according to your agreement when they replace a part it is always refurbished as a rule. One of my monitors died right before my warranty expired and they sent me a new one which was refurbished. It last all of a few months and by then my warranty had expired as well as the warranty on the refurb one.

Let us know if they give you a new drive.

Re: Seagate Momentus Firmware update problem (to fix clicking noise)

The phone conversation went a lot better then I thought it would. They tried the refurb drive option and I said no way I want brand new drives since the laptops were just purchased. There's like a 21 day policy she said that if the hardware is defective within those days they will replace it.  I'm past the 21 days by a few days but since all 5 laptops set in my office for 2 weeks before I unpacked them they offered to replace the drives with new ones and I didn't have to push too hard. I'm just hoping the new drives will work good. The drives will be blank which is fine because I create my own images! I'll send another update once I get the new drives and test them.
