Optiplex GX520

My daughter runs a Dell Optiplex GX520 P4 3.0 Ghz and with the ram upgraded to 2.5Gig and XP-Professional.

Will she be able to upgrade to Windows 7 without any motherboard/Bios issues? I have run the Windows 7 advisor tool and that shows no issues apart from installing the Windows 7 driver for the Belkin USB wi-fi.

Hi, If the windows 7 advisor gives you the all clear, then you should have no problems. I have an 8 year old system i keep as backup, and that was given the all clear by the Win 7 advisor.

That's what I thought until I read a post where somebody had the all clear from the Windows 7 advisor but when they came to load it they had an error message telling them that there was a problem with the ACPI( I think!!) and conside using another computer to install on to. Not very useful when you have already run the advisor and bought the new OS on the strength of it.

Re: Optiplex GX520

Well, I loaded in the Windows 7 RC disc (build 7100) and it went pretty well. The Belkin 54G USB adapter worked after I installed the correct Vista driver from the Belkin site (no utility software included, just the driver). Windows 7 updated everything else, including itself. After the install I loaded back the Files and Settings I had saved onto a usb drive with the wizard supplied on the Win 7 disc I created from the RC download.

All in all a good experience.

Hi Shaun, The retail versions do carry a lot of drivers, so you should be ok.
