Monitor changing brightness depending on windows open

I'm not sure if this is a monitor problem as it may be somothing to do with my graphics card (GTX 280.) My monitor is a 2408WFP 24".

 

My problem is that, when a dark window is open like Spotify, the rest of my screen gets very bright. If I drag it slowly off screen, it gets darker and darker until it goes normal again. This can be annoying if I'm on a webpage with a dark background because the rest of the window is a little too bright to see things clearly.

I don't own your monitor, but I do own a Viewsonic 24" and it has a user-selectable feature to automatically adjust the brightness and contrast (they call it dynamic contrast ratio) based on the content displayed. I'm not sure whether your monitor has this feature, but I'd check your options for this kind of thing and de-select it if it bothers you.
