Unable to type password or characters during Windows Log on.

Unable to type password or characters in Windows Log on.

PC:

  1. The XPS 400 *** Pen D 820 (2.80ghz) Dual core.
  2. 286mb ATI PCI-Express X-16 (DVI/VGA/TV) Radeon.
  3. Tons of mem & Hard drive
  4. Win XP pro Sp-2.

PROBLEM:

After Boot I am unable to insert characters into the Windows Logon. This occurred after I downloaded a large collection of Windows security patches. (Approx 10.)

Corrective actions with negative results:

  1. Replaced Keyboard
  2. Tried Safe mode but same problem
  3. Ran F12 system check with all systems ok.
  4. Checked set-up options all ok.
  5. Ran the Windows repair cd option and using the BOOTCFG /SCAN the hard drive is ok with data still in it.
  6. Showed partitions ok and Windows is loaded.
  7. Viewed the 4 green light displays during Boot but lights blink erratically and unable to pin down a consistent pattern for the troubleshoot process.
  8. Did located an error message during Boot but after removing all cards and checking cables, connectors, etc, the error message does not appear any longer but still can not type Password. The error said; ERROR ALLOCATING THE MEM BAR FOR PCI DEVICE.
  9. Cleared password and cmos but still only Boots to the Windows Logon screen and still unable to type characters, and the cancel option is not available to bypass the Password window. The only option I am allowed to click on with the mouse is Shutdown or Restart. If I hit enter, the password window turns a light grey and PC locks up.
  10. Tried to do a Symantec restore but unable to highlight the Restore button and can only push the bottom exit or cancel button. May have ruined my Restore chances when I cleared the Cmos.
  11. The mouse always works and I can type characters using the repair cd for dos type commands. Also, keyboard works in Set-up and can type characters in set-up.
  12. Using the Reinstallation cd for repairs I get stuck at the end because I am unable to type the Product key.
  13. After a complete Windows reinstallation all was successful until the Product Key Window appears and am unable to type the Product Key or any characters.

CURRENT STATUS:

  1. I am stuck at the window which says to enter the Product Key when I Boot with the Windows Reinstallation disk. I am unable to use any other options at this point. It says Windows has been successfully installed but to finalize it I need to enter the Product Key but still am unable to insert text.
  2. Also, during boot I now get an error that says; FLOPPY diskette seek failure. But the PC is not equipped with a floppy disk. I may have done something in Set-up but I do not think this error has anything to do with anything and I probably can locate the problem later.
  3. If I Boot with-out the Windows Reinstallation cd inserted after the PC Boots up, I am back into Windows Set-up again but with a message that says to insert the Reinstallation cd. In other words, I am stuck! Can’t go back, can’t go forward…..

ANY ADVICE on what I should do?:

1.      Do you think I have a bad MOBO or other Hardware problem and how do I check it? I do not want to replace it unless I know for sure it is bad.

2.      Do you think I have a Software or bad driver issue and if so how do I locate the problem with-out Windows access?

3.      Or have I been chasing my Tail and now stuck in a hole, and need to trash the MOBO and start over?

4.      Or work another job so I can save for a new PC?

5.      Or blame it on my wife and have her work another job?

6.      Or go to the Grocery store and bum quarters for a new PC?

7.      OR ALL OF THE ABOVE?

Thank you, CNCSWISS.

Re: Unable to type password or characters during Windows Log on.

If all else fails I would choose number five.  I'll assume you tried a  different keyboard, and if it's a USB keyboard you tried different outlets.  I'm not 100% sure this will work during startup after a reinstallation.  At windows start up there is an ease of access which will allow you to use up on screen keyboard.  But like I said I'm not sure if you can access their .
