Security Updates for Vista Problems

Windows offered 8 updates today with a size a bit over 16 MB. Of these, only the ones for Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Defender downloaded and installed correctly.

The updates for Vista :KB973540, KB968389, KB971557, KB956744, KB971657, and KB973507 seemed  to download and install correctly. On this Vista machine the updates are a bit more belabored than on the XP computer...you get a  screen saying "configuring updates", then another a bit later about "reverting updates", a black screen with a rough white font which are apparently registry entries that quickly pass by, and various splash screens that are indicative of the computer trying to start up. When I check for Windows updates again after getting back on line, it briefly shows that updates are up to date, then changes to the 6 mentioned above that need to be installed. I am pretty sure these updates have downloaded because they show up in the update history as failed, they just won't install. So at this point I unsure what to do next.

I attempted the above steps a total of 3 times with the same result. Is there some way to delete these updates and try to download again. This is the first time I have had trouble with a Windows update. XP has updates of about the same size and are probably OK, but would like some feedback before I update that computer.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

If your updates are indicated as "failed." they have not been properly downloaded.  Record the KB number of each update and go to the microsoft download page.  One at a time, download each update, saving to desktop.  Then with unnecessary programs turned off, try installing the updates one at a time.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a go. I assume the correct download will eliminate or cancel out the ones that failed.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

The unused updates will just be garbage since they can't be used.  Ignore them.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

I tried downloading and/or installing them one at a time...they still showed up on the Windows update page. All installed correctly except KB971657. So it looks like I might have a corrupted copy of this update. I will go locate and download a fresh copy from the MS website and see what happens

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

If you see all of your updates listed in Add/Remove programs, set the update page to ignor these updates so they don't show up again if this is a problem for you.  Select "don't show me this update again."  This often, but not always, works.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

I downloaded a fresh copy of the single update in question from the MS site and tried again with the same result, so just hid the update as you suggest. Problem solved!  Wink

Dale,

KB971657 is a security update ranked 'Important', so it is in your best interest to get this problem properly resolved and the update installed. It seems you are not the only one having a tough time with this certain update, a Forum Admin (ourstanley) at COU has also reported the same but has yet to find a resolution too.

Maybe the information below might help:

Article:

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

A little caution please!  I suggested that you hide updates AFTER they were properly installed.  Critical updates can usually not be hidden even if you "hide" them but will eventually show up again.  If the inability to install an update continues, you must contact Microsoft for help.  Before doing this, however, try installing the update in Safe Mode  from the downloaded update on your desktop.

An email was sent to MS Help and Support to see what they suggest.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

I spent 2 weeks trying to get KB971557 to install manually after about three months of failures on the "auto" method..  Tried all the ideas and recommendations I found online-including those from the experts at Microsoft..  Nothing worked.  Finally, I downloaded and SAVED the update rather than going directly from download to install.  It installed perfectly from my saved file.  I am not very technical. It just seemed that the "download" part of the process was working, but the "install" part wasn't.  Therefore, I decided to try including the third step (saving) between the two.  It worked.  Good luck!  It worked for me.

Re: Security Updates for Vista Problems

The update pattern on the Vista machine seems to have changed in the last few weeks. It just says "Windows Update" when I go to that little window. This seems to coincide with when I installed MSE as the AV. Previously, multiple updates (15) were presented for Office 2007), which I don't use or have installed. These included several service paks and other assorted stuff. All that kind of stuff quite coming. Couldn't get the update for IE8 to install correctly either. I think these purported security threats are perhaps overated. I know that this is not the politically correct way of looking at it, but I am trusting my security products to keep me out of trouble until I can get rid of Vista.

I guess I am rather dense on the subject, but how do I save a Windows updated for later installation?

If you have an older version of Office, e.g., 2003, and have downloaded/installed the "Office Compatibility Pack" --- which enhances the 2003 program to be able to open, edit, and save files using the newer 2007 .docx  format --- you will be presented with updates for Office 2007 [even though you don't have the full-fledged Office 2007 on your system].

(for more info on the compatibility pack, see http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displayLang=en )

Dale:

I can't quite remember if you use Online Armor on that system, if so, temporarily uncheck Program Guard on the General tab in OA and see if the update will now install.
