Windows XP disc provided reads as "not genuine"

My Inspiron E 1705 has a blue screen error, for an unmountable boot volume, I am advised to reinstall Windows XP so I can use the backup I have on an external hard drive to restore the data.  I have booted from the XP cd provided, now when the system should install, it says there is not a genuine Windows cd in the drive.  What to do???  I am paralyzed for work and finances if I cannot restore this data.

Re: Windows XP disc provided reads as "not genuine"

Many Dell's have a recovery partition that is accessed (for XP Systems) with CTRL/F11 at initial boot.  If your system has the recovery partition you can use that to restore the PC to the factory condition (and no discs are needed).

Exactly where in the process do you get this notice? is it after you have installed and if it is, it sounds like you entered an incorrect Product Key (one possibility).

If you are in the US, HERE is the Dell on-line form to request replacement discs.
