Hi, jrickard:

Yes, it's safe to leave a lithium ion battery plugged in. They cannot be overcharged. Please see this excellent article for "care and feeding" tips. Main points are:

1. Exercise your battery frequently. Even short discharges/recharges are good.

2. Heat is bad.

3. Complete discharges should be avoided.
