Desk top Freezes Up Goes To Blue Screen, Please Help

I have a Dell desktop with windows XP. I recently downloaded a program from a bit torrent. When I opened it up it was full of trojans. McAfee blocked them from coming in but some damage has been done. Now my computer will freeze up and keeps going to blue screen. When I click on a web site it sometimes says page not found. Also, I can't download anything. It always says system error and needs to close. I went to dell support and we did a direct-connect. They said nothing is wrong with my hardware. They said it is most likely a software issue or a virus. I also tried in safe mode to do system restore and back my computer up one week and that didn't work because the page froze. The software tech said he wanted $150.00 (that I don't have) to correct the problem. He said with no money the only other option I have is to back up all my files on disk and they will format my computer and start over. I really need your help. Do you have any Idea on what I might be able to do to correct this problem?

Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external case or as a secondary in another system, and use a fully updated virus scanner to scan the drive.  Then replace it in the original system and try booting  -- if it won't, you can try a repair install of Windows, or do as the technician suggested - which is probably the best course of action - and restore the system back to its original state by using the Dell quick restore.  This IS data destructive, so BACK UP your data files while you have the drive attached to the other system.
