HELP!!!Dell inspiron mini 9, ubuntu, how on earth do you get the internet working????!!!!!!

Recieved my long awaited for dell inspiron mini 9 this morning. Straight away tried to set up the wireless network in my house with no luck. Tried inputting all the info manually and automatically and nothing, it just kept asking for my WEP key which i entered over and over and over again.

I am now attempting to connect to the internet using a TMobile web'n'walk broadband dongle, and whilst the netbook is picking up the software, it wont run it and 9 hours later I STILL have no internet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dell support have been totally and utterly useless, as have the ubuntu staff who fail to pick up their phones

Any information, advice or step-by-step guides on how to get this working would be much appreciated!!!And soon would be good before I throw this netbook out my window!!

I feel your pain. I think I had the same problem, and I spent hours cursing at my a90! I finally got the wireless to work, but I'm not exactly sure what I did. I'll try to describe what happened, and maybe that'll help you ...

First, I gave up using the automatic mode. That just kept asking for my WEP passphrase over and over and never worked. So I switched to manual configuration. I set it up  basically like this...

  • Network name: <name of my network>
  • Password type: WEP key (hexadecimal)
  • Network password: <my network password in HEXADECIMAL format>
  • Configuration: Automatic Configuration (DHCP)

Then, I think it just took some time to connect ... it wasn't immediate. And I probably rebooted one time too. But FINALLY it just started working!

There's another discussion in here about hexadecimal passwords that might help. ("wireless connection works fine without WEP, but not with WEP"). Maybe it explains your issue, although a lot of it is over my head.

I think that maybe you could use some help by reading and posting in the Dell Linux Forum. Also try using WPA-PSK(TKIP Security(Personal) you'll be surprised with the results. Wink

Hi Rick!

Thanks for the advice. I switched my network security from WEP to WPA and everything seems to work fine. My Dell was able to connect automatically this time. Plus, I could use a normal password, and not that long hexadecimal one!

GREAT JOB! Yes Thanks for posting back. Could you mark the verify answer(s) that helped you solve your problem, so if someone else searches the forums, they can see what you did to fix your problem(s).

Thanks,
