Seagate Barracuda Update

I know several of you have replied on this thread about the Seagate firmware issue.

  • Potentially affected Seagate model numbers:  ST3500620AS, ST3750630AS, ST31000340AS
  • Potentially affected Dell part numbers: FY291, RU596, GP218, XR710, RN225, WK405

To check if this issue could impact you:

  • Enter Service Tag xxxxxxx  (or PPID or Serial #)  in the text field on the bottom right of that page.
  • If your drive is affected, you should update your drive’s firmware
  • Go to this page to download the appropriate firmware (depending on whether you have a 500MB hard drive or a 750 or 1TB drive).

After you’ve updated the firmware, things should operate as normal.  However, if your drive is already inaccessible so you can’t update the firmware, please contact Seagate directly by clicking on the Technical Support section from this link. Seagate can flash the drive’s firmware at their facilities. It’s worth noting that in this state, the data still resides on the drive and your data should still be recoverable.

Once it’s flashed, the drive should be accessible again. If the inaccessible drive is in a RAID array, there may be limitations to the recovery and reinstatement of your drive, please consult with your Seagate agent for details. See Seagate’s support page for more background.

Note the procedure to “unlock” the drive and make it accessible again is a process only Seagate and their affiliates are equipped to do.  On behalf of our customers, Dell has negotiated with Seagate to provide this service for free for Dell customers who are affected and have experienced the failure.
