Dell 922 printer not communicating

I am running a Dell Dimension 3100 with Windows XP, SP3, (P4 2.8 GHz cpu and 512 MB RAM) connecting via USB to a Dell AOI 922 printer.
The printer ceased functioning. The problem initially was traced to a disconnected USB cable at the printer. The connection was restored, but there was still no print output. (The printer does perform the copy function.) The power and USB cables were reseated without resolving the issue. Troubleshooting tests were performed as per instructions from software with no success. I could access the printer control panel and clear print jobs. When running the Dell "Print Test Page" there would be a long delay before presenting the page to the screen.
After all tests were run unsuccessfully, followed Dell instructions to uninstall the printer, restart, and reinstall from CD. This has created more problems. Once reinstalled, there was still no print capability. Yet now, I cannot access the Printers control panel, nor can I access the Dell Drivers cd. I can access other CDs and other control panels. In Task Manager, it reports the Printer Control Panel not responding or the CDFront... not responding. When I try to print, I have started getting a spoolsv.exe error: "The instruction at "0x77e7853f" referenced memory at "0x00530059"." Also when attempting a restart, the dlbtBMGR has to be forced quit. I have also seen a runtime error, rundll32 force quit and setup32.exe force quit.
I have downloaded a later driver than is on my CD from Dell support, but that doesn't seem to install.
Any suggestions?
