Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

Hi All,

I have a permanent mark on my XPS 16 screen in the lower right area, which lines up with the front edge of the touch pad volume adjust area.  When the screen is closed it appears to touch some points of the touchpad and / or keypad.  I bought this unit because of the nice screen, so a mark caused simply by closing the screen would appear to be a problem!  At the moment the mark is small (10mm long) and barely noticeable, but will likely get worse.  At the moment I am placing the soft bag that came with the laptop over the screen before I close it to stop the problem getting worse.  I also notice that screen appears to be lifting around the edges.   It can be pushed back but lifts again shortly after.  Has anyone else seen these problems?  Dell - what should I do??

Thanks,

Shane.

Hello Shane,

I am Ivan pleased to meet you.

I have bought a Dell XPS 16 laptop recently and I wanted to ask you a question regarding a Blue Screen of Death but I will initially address some questions in accordance to your problem.

I. "When the screen is closed it appears to touch some points of the touchpad and / or keypad."

The touchpad line which contains:

1) all multimedia buttons

   - previous

   - stop,

   - play/pause

   - next

   - mute

   - decrease volume

   - increase volume

   - eject

   - the power on/off button

   - "studio XPS" sign

... is purely flat and I don't see any chance of getting the screen touched by it when the laptop is closed.

II. "At the moment I am placing the soft bag that came with the laptop over the screen before I close it to stop the problem getting worse."

From the moment I bought the laptop I haven't stopped using this protective synthetic material to separate the screen from the keyboard. I have had a friend of mine whose girlfriend has put something small between the screen and the keyboard and have accidentally closed the laptop without taking notice of whether some particles or something stays in the way of the screen to close. The result - broken screen! So, use it everytime you close your laptop. In addition, use the protective sleeve provided with the laptop no matter whether you have an additional bag which you usually use for carrying the machine.

Another recommendation. For the purpose of not damaging your screen, if you are using a backpack to carry the laptop, position the laptop in the backpack, so that the upper part of the screen touches your back. This is recommended because all other things you carry in your bag will hit the bottom of the laptop which is way better protected than the glossy upper part of the laptop. And when you put the backpack in your lap, always put it so that the back of the backpack looks up in your face. This way the laptop will rest on its bottom.

=================================================

Question:

I am constantly receiving Blue Screens of Death when uploading great amount of data for a long time using my Intel WiFi 5300 Mini-Card ( NOT Half ).

So, I begin uploading with a speed of (1.0 - 1.5) MBytes / second and after 2 hours or so, I received a Blue Screen of Death with an error description message saying:
“IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL”

If you ask me now “Which device’s which Interrupt Request has been activated?” I couldn’t answer your question.

1)     I have left the laptop working for the whole night not doing anything – the problem is not reproduced.

2)     Leaving the laptop to upload with an average speed of 1.5 Mbytes / s for about 2 hours results in BSOD.

Either the problem is with the wireless network adapter (I am using wireless router for my home network – Linksys WRT610N) or with the SSD disk – Samsung 256 GB SSD PM800 2.5”.

This night I am going to figure out whether the problem is in the wireless adapter by switching from it to the Broadband NetLink LAN adapter using wired connection to the router. If the problem still persists it could be the SSD. It would be a great surprise to me, since these disks handle up to 10 simultaneous read / write operations, and I am away from the thought that this impounds limitation of the amount of files being uploaded. But what if the number of files gets above that simultaneous limit? All other operations are queued.

If you have had similar experience, please share observations on it.

My XPS 16’s configuration is as follows:

=================================

[1] T9550 2.66 GHz, FSB: 1066 MHz, Cache: 6 MB

[2] 4 GB DDR3 1067 MHz

[3] Samsung 256GB SSD, PM800, 2.5”

[4] 16” RGBLED Full-HD 1920 x 1080 glare screen with 2.0 MP integrated webcam

[5] ATi Radeon 3670 512 MB dedicated video memory

=================================

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

Hi, Yes, this is happening to me to.

I have looked after this laptop as if it were made of liquid platinum. Really really handled it with care. I have kept it in the cloth bag, and then in the laptop case.

I am absolutely GUTTED that the high gloss screen is now marked in two areas. THIS IS A DESIGN FAULT. the lid/screen has enough flex in it for the screen to touch the keys in transit and scratch itself.

The screen is the best screen I have ever seen on a laptop. it is truely stunning. And mine is now SCRATCHED. I will be complaining to dell.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

I have written my complaint in MS Word 2007 and copying it here caused conversion of the XML to HTML. The new Microsoft open document format ( 2007 ) contains the whole data ( written text ) and formatting as in XML format. That's why the HTML wasn't able to recognize it. It was very strange, since before posting the thread I copied the ".docx" contents into the forum's topic I was just creating and the whole text looked as if it was typed directly in the editor of the dell community's site.

See if Dell will replace the screen under warranty.  If they will, put a folded piece of soft paper towel between the screen and keyboard when you close it.  I've done this with every notebook I've owned -- it not only prevents scratches but also prevents finger oils from transferring to the screen from the keys and palmrest.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

I have the same problems. I'm also very carefull with my laptop but this seems to be a design fault and I do not see how I could prevent this without putting anything soft inbetween (should not be the sollution). I informed Dell and they asked me to send pictures from the scratches on the screen but this is quite difficult because of the high reflection of the screen so I did not send them the information yet.

Has anyone managed to get a screen replacement?

You will have to dream up a way to use a back drop, and take the pictures.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

I had / have the same problem. I successfully took pictures as they asked by pointing the camera at an extreme angle. I did get the screen replaced, but that created a whole new set of problems. I originally had a 1080i screen, but when I got my computer back, I had a generic screen. After weeks of Technical Service telling me that I was wrong, I finally convinced them and just yesterday I got my new 1080i screen installed.

However, I still have the same issue of the screen touching the keyboard, so I went to the hardware store and bought some small adhesive rubber bumpers and placed them at the top corners of the screen. It helps a lot, but still have a small corner of the space bar touching.

I agree, this is a factory defect, probably with the placing of the hinge point. They should be fixed by Dell at no cost, but I do not see Dell admitting to the mistake any time soon.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

:^/ Thankfully, my own XPS M1210 doesn't share this problem, but I'll chime in anyway.

• Paper towels contain paper fibers that can scratch.  That's why one shouldn't use them to clean eyeglasses, nor computer screens.  Instead, I recommend a chamois from the auto care section of the department store.  Get the synthetic kind instead of the leather ones.  Not only can one trim such a cloth to the exact dimensions needed to protect the screen, it'll double as a handy cleaning cloth as well.

• Don't carry your laptop in a bag without its own protective sleeve, or skin.  The laptop should be the only thing in its skin while transported, except for the thin cloth sandwiched between its keyboard and screen.

• Copying and pasting from Microsoft word into Internet message boards isn't a good idea, as we've seen.  If you must edit in Word, copy and paste from it into Notepad, instead.  This should trim out the HTML and stuff.  Then copy and paste from Notepad into the message board editor.

That, or just use Firefox's spell checker; it'll catch spelling typos right in the message board editor, without Microsoft being necessary.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

I send some pictures and I had to persuade the helpdesk a bit but they send someone over today and he replaced my screen on-site without cost. It took him quite a while to replace the screen because it is fully integrated into the body of the laptop. But at the end, everything seems to be ok.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

Replacing the screen will not fix the problem.  It only cures a symptom. The real problem is the hinge point on the screen and the lack of clearance when the lid closes. A replaced screen will eventually just get scratched when you close the lid.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

Correct, Dell should modify their design. But if a compare the old screen (from februari 2009) and the new screen (end of october) no changes have been made. The halpdesk also told me that this was an unknown issue so I don't think Dell is working on this one.

Re: Studio XPS 16 LCD screen being marked / scratched when closed

Hi! I don't know if all dell laptops are like this but the xps has an acrylic cover in front of the screen... (that's why the screen is glossy). And fortunately you can easily repair acrylic... last week my girlfriend scratched my screen with a curtain rod (not sure if it's the right term... since i speak french... :P)... but anyhow... my laptop is still backed up by a full guarantee, but i can't afford to lose my laptop for a period of time... and don't want to go through the hassle of changing the cover... so i went to a local plastic company, and they gave me a 3 step product called Novus...(i didn't even had to buy anything, they just gave samples... wich was more then enough...) and after the second step, my screen was already as good as new! to apply the product i used a microfiber... wich i also use during transportation...

I hope this helps!

Felix
