XPS 730x Random Rebooting. Updated 2-24-09. Post your results!

Please hold off on getting any parts replaced.

(1) Power the PC off, disconnect the PC power cord from the rear of the PC, open the case cover. Look for the screws holding the H2C cooling unit (8) to the motherboard. Tighten these. Were your screws loose? Replace the cover and power the PC on.

(2) Press F2 to enter the System Setup. Use the following settings -
H2C Instructions
CPU Configuration Screen
XD Bit Capability = Enabled
SpeedStep = Enabled
C-STATE Tech = Disabled
C State package Limit = C6 (grayed out)
 
Frequency/Voltage Control Screen
QPI Frequency = Auto
Memory Ratio = Auto
XMP Support = Disabled
CPU Core (Non-turbo) Ratio = 24
 
Overclock Configuration Screen
Adjust CPUBC1k (MHz) = 133
Spread Spectrum = Enabled
Adjust PCI Frequency (MHz) = Auto
Adjust PCI-E Frequency (MHz) = 100
Intel TurboMode Tech = Enabled
1 - 4 core turbo speed limit = 28
Tdc = 180
Tdp = 200
 
Overvoltage Configuration Screen
Dynamic CPU Vcore Offset = +120mv
DDR3 Memory Voltage = Auto
I0H Voltage = 1.10V
QPI and Uncore Voltage = Default

Air Cooled Instructions
CPU Configuration Screen
XD Bit Capability = Enabled
SpeedStep = Enabled

* Go into the Power Management settings and set it to the High Performance plan
* Test the PC
* If it still reboots, remove the Dell Thermal Application
* Test the PC
* Post your results of this testing

Hi,


I seem to have fixed the issue for random reboot on 730x H2C by making the changes in BIOS and un-installing thermal app.  Dell contractor onsite did all 3 items including checking for loose screws on cooling unit.

I still have problems sometimes doing a cold boot where the machine will just hang with fans spinning on high.  Another post I found seems to get around the issue, by holding reset button while turning on power button, then releasing reset button.

Now, machine is fairly stable, but my games are crashing.  World in Conflict and GTA IV are crashing on me.  I have run the pre-assesment test while rebooting pc and that is ok.  Also checked directx 10 tests via dxdiag and that is ok.  I have dual nVidia 9800GT's.  I'm running Vista x64.


Also, I cannot run the diag CD when rebooting - I get Drive F: Driver "Extcd001' unit 0.  batch file F:\dosmenu.bat missing. I wanted to run some other tests from the tree.  I had wiped out all partitions when setting up my raid 1, but Dell tech support over phone did not tell me to re-setup any kind of utility partition.

Oh, one more thing.  Dell wanted to throw a new motherboard, memory, cooling unit at the issue, but I cancelled my dispatch.  I went through this with my 720 H2C last year and I know from reading the posts online that this issue with 730x seemed to be more around BIOS/motherboard/overclocking. Any idea when the Corsair DDR3 6 GB tri-channel will be available from Dell?  I need to trade in my old Corsair DDR2.

Disable SLI and check the games.
