How to save money and become greener this year

In this week's episode of Small Business Advice TV, experts discuss how to be economically friendly and focus on the bottom line at the same time.

What is one thing would you change about how you manage your small business to be greener and save money?

Re: How to save money and become greener this year

Ahoy.  Well, I'm not a Small Business owner, but there is a wealth of information about ways to green your Small Business out there, most of which are quite simple and will save you quite a bit of money and energy in the long run.

If I had to pick one thing, I'd go with the easiest and most obvious:

Turn off your electronic equipment when not in use.
This seems pretty intuitiuve, but it's surprising how many times this simple act is forgotten or overlooked (I have a sign on my front door reminding me to turn stuff off before I leave my house).  In some cases, this will reduce your energy usage by 25%.  In the case of computer equipment, especially the older models, it could cut your energy usage by 50%!

OK, one more since I'm on a roll:

Change your light bulbs to CFLs.
CFLs use 66% less energy than regular light bulbs and they last 13 times longer.

Looking forward to seeing what other suggestions are posted here.

Re: How to save money and become greener this year

I recycle.  A LOT!  As much as I can really.  My current living situation is pretty poor when it comes to living green.  I live near a small town, roughly 1,600 people, and recycling is a new technology to these people.  WE BURN GARBAGE!  So, even though my house piles up with stacks of paper and little cuts of paper from time to time i feel good knowing that I have only taking the trash to the burning barrel twice in one year.  Most of it was paper too.  I keep all of the plastic and all of the cans.

I have found crafty ways of recycling my pop boxes.  Being a small business owner in the RPG Industry I get to play games all day and call it work.  Some of the game props are making out pretty well.  I had to boast about the *Fat Dragon Games Dragonshire Set* (dude, this set is awesome) and the EZ Dungeons Start set (great buy here too).  These are basic mini terrains for use with RPGs.  The EZ Dungeons is a set for building dungeons and Dragonshire is a city set.  Perfect places for recycled material.

So I stuffed some foam from all of the shipped products I receive into the Dungeon walls.  That worked out ok, but I ran out of foam and the foam dust is just palin bad.  Then I looked at the stack of pop carton boxes and thought, "This is gonna be awesome!"  I have a second level that needs a floor and a ceiling, and a roof and a foundation.  All printed mini terrains using Pop Carton boxes.

Too bad the community burns garbage though, right?

I also recommend those light bulbs that are curvy and say they last longer.  Trust me they do.  This one has lasted over a year.

I have not gotten in the habit of unplugging cords.  Any advice on this?  I was thinking just power strips to make it a quick flip of the switch.
