Dell 3000 series PC restore problem

Hi, Firstly, Merry Xmas to everyone :)

I have a Dell 3000 Series pc with windows xp home SP2. I have had some bugs which I am unable to remove, so have saved any data/pics etc on a usb flash drive.  I would like to clean the slate and do a PC restore to the original Dell settings. I am following the instructions (I think), but when I get to hold control and press F11, then release, I don't get the correct screen (the grey choose between safe/networking etc page comes up instead).
What am I doing wrong? Maybe my computer can't be restored this way?

Any help would be appreciated.

Try thr right ctrl key and tap the F11 key about 3 or 4 times and i'm sure you'd get to the right screen

Re: Dell 3000 series PC restore problem

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've tried right and left control key already. I've held the control and tapped f11 and also I've tried holding both keys continually (not just tapping), but still it either goes to the choose safe/networking etc screen OR ignores it totally and goes to xp logging in screen.

There has to be something silly that I'm doing or maybe this series Dell doesn't have a PC restore?  How can I find this out?.

I really appreciate your help.

Will get back to you after Christmas lunch :)

Re: Dell 3000 series PC restore problem

If you purchased the computer after July, 2004, there is a good chance you have PC Restore.  There are a number of things that can disable it, but you may be able to get it working with some work.

First, the CTRL_F11 combination only works during the first part of the boot process.  For Windows XP you should see a Dell screen with a white POST progress bar in the lower part of the screen for about the first three to five seconds, followed by a blue bar at the top of the screen, and if you look quickly, you may see the phrase "Loading Descriptor for PBR-2...Done" just before Windows begins to load.  You need to press CTRL_F11 as the white POST progress bar is reaching the right end and release both keys at the same time before you see the notification about loading the descriptor for PBR-2.  Some folks used to tell me that you could only do this once and then you would need to restart to try again, but I've also been told you can press this combination more than once to make certain the PC Restore screen pops up.  The key thing is that both CTRL and F11 must be released simultaneously; it's ok if you don't get both pressed at the same time.

If that doesn't work out for you, the only thing left is to use a Windows XP installation CD to perform the installation manually.

BryanRS

Go to XP Disk Management and check that you have three partitions on the hard drive, a large C:/ partition, a 39± mb partition that contains Dell diagnostics for your system and a 3.7± gb partition that is the Dell PC Restore by Symantec Image.

Dimension systems shipped after 7.16.2004, have the Dell PC Restore System by Symantec factory installed on the hard drive.

Re: Dell 3000 series PC restore problem

Something I omitted from my first post that Bev has reminded me about is that you don't see the blue bar and the message about PBR-2 unless the special Dell MBR is active.  This is required in order to activate PC Restore.  If you still have the partition itself, Mr. Dan Goodell has posted enough info to allow you to get it working again if you feel like doing the work.  You will find his PC Restore page here:  Inside the Dell PC Restore Partition.

Re: Dell 3000 series PC restore problem

Hi,

When u turn on ur system u will see dell logo, Next screen would be black screen with www.dell.com, When u see this sceen just tap CTRL + F11 key at the same time, U will get it(www.dell.com screen will stay for a second - Make sure that u do it fast), If it doesnt work - Use this link and  http://tech.atjolie.com/  - Pc Restore will start automatically. Last option would be OSRI
