Suggestions for PCI X16 Video Card

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new graphics card for my Dell and would welcome any and all suggestions. I know there are a lot more cards out there than are on Dell's site that would be compatible with my computer. Too many!

I believe that I need a PCI Express X16 card.I'd like a 512 MB card.

I don't do any intense gaming, etc. Just want smoother, clearer video, and be able to use the DVI cable that came with the 'puter. The graphics are integrated on this machine. I'd like to spend about $75 at the most, give or take a few bucks. I figure they are pretty to install.

Thanks

Re: Suggestions for PCI X16 Video Card

Hi again,

Ok, I got the XFX GeForce 8600GT card. In the book, "It is advised to disable onboard graphics controllers either by jumperon the mainboard, or by changing graphics adapter priority in the  BIOS, CMOS or hardware setup.". Aww man, is this gonna be a hassle? I really don't want to mess with the BIOS,CMOS, etc. and don't know what jumper to mess with.

Before I get into this, does anybody know if it really is as hard as it sounds. This is one computer part I have not messed with, ever.

I have the original CD with the "then current "drivers for the old card.

Another question... My LAN uses an Nvidia nForce 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. Is this part of the integrated graphics card on my system now? If I disable the graphics drivers for the card, or mess with the jumper, will it mess with my LAN? I see in the control panel there are 2 different add/remove programs, I guess 1 for each program.

Looking forward to excellent answers, as I usually get on these forums. Can't wait to get this card in here.

Thanks  Confused

Re: Suggestions for PCI X16 Video Card

I was looking around the boards and I found a similiar situation but with a Vostro. When the new video card is installed it will auto detect and override the integrated video. Is this correct?  Then I won't have to go into the BIOS.

Thanks again

Re: Suggestions for PCI X16 Video Card

Hi Davet50,

I can't find the board that it was on.  But I have been reading through some others and I guess I do have to get into the BIOS.  Can you tell me how to do this and what to look for to disable the on board video?  From there it doesn't look too intimidating.

Thanks again

Re: Suggestions for PCI X16 Video Card

Go HERE and click on System setup

It will tell you how to enter the setup(bios).

The section of the bios you are interested in is the ADVANCED section under these two heading:

Integrated peripherals

Displays information about peripherals configuration such as Serial ATA, HD Audio, Onboard nVidia LAN and Onboard LAN boot ROM.

PnP/PCI Configurations

Displays information about PnP /PCI Configurations such as Init Display First.

I would start with the intergrated peripherals and see if it will allow you to change it there. if not the next section you would set the  PNP/PCI to Init Display First
