E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

Hello,

In late August I purchased an E228wfp.  Everything worked fine.  Now every 10 minutes the monitor goes black and I have to power it back up using the power button.

I'm using it on a ATI Radeon x1550 video card.  All Drivers are updated.  Video card is working fine.

I assume it's still under warranty.  What can I do to get it replaced or fixed?

best,

Jose

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

I just spent eight hours of my life trying to tell the Dell "techs" about my similar issue. I despise these folks.

Finally a supervisor said they would send me a refurb, but I am demanding a new monitor. I paid full price for a new monitor and expect a new replacement monitor.

BTW - I also got my monitor in August, like the rest of you.

Yes.  I had to return the broken monitor in the replacement box.  Dell provided the postage slip for return inside the box of the new monitor.

But did they send you a new, or refurbished, replacement monitor?

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

that is exactly the way I felt. I bought a new one and expected a new one in return. however, though the agent told me it would be new, his supposed supervisor (they seem to always have another person who claims to be the supervisor on the call after you are done speaking with the orginal agent, and that person has virtually nothing to bring to the table) said that they couldn't guarantee a new one.  When I received the replacement monitor the box had a "refurbished" sticker on it but the monitor itself looked brand new. I was impressed that there wasn't so much as a smudge or a scratch. It comes packaged exactly as a new one does, except it had the blue connecting cable already attached to the back (perhaps because they are nearly impossible to disconnect) and I also got a second set of cables in a separate box. And - so far anyway - it's working! I am now starting to think that you cannot get a new one because they KNOW they're all defective and all the replacements are are all going to be refurbs. Of course they would never admit this, but this cetainly sounds like a trend with monitors bought back in Aug 2008.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

I've started having similar issues with the E228WFP as well.  Mine was purchased about mid-September 2008.  It's not every 10 minutes exactly but it seems to happen randomly regardless of what I'm doing (games, internet, movies, etc).  I have all the drivers updated for the LCD as well as my Sapphire Radeon 4670.  All the cables are plugged in properly as well.

Can anyone simply call Dell to get the monitor replaced?  I purchased this from Best Buy and didn't pick up any of their additional warranties.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

Once ive finished getting this problem fixed, I will probably never buy Dell again.

Chronicled my call here... http://twitter.com/meStevo long story short, over 2 hours on the phone, my power settings were blamed despite it happening on 2 computers, and after the call was transferred to a supervisor who backed up her rep.

They wont replace it on this call because it passed a self test.  Well... it's not going black right now, when it does go dark, self test does not appear on the screen, so it fails.

Talked to 3 reps, the second one was trying to replace it and got an error and had to transfer me (my monitor was probably an EPP purchase, no idea) and then 45 min later with rep number 3 he said he would not replace despite the problem happening on 2 diff computers.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

Guys, we need a secret membership card called "DeFunked E228 Owner's Club".

I own four of these and get nervous about each slipping into a display coma through no design or efforts of me. It appears to be a bad monitor with internal handicap issues. Dell, Microsoft, Apple and others are going to have a reality check as consumers look to other vendors with support teams that speak English.

The Dell support teams get a C+ in my book. I'm not a demanding person, but for the expense of the E228wfp, it should be better in service or just Dell's support teams should ID and post the problem and solutions offered at this time. I draw parallels with the auto industries. The big three failed on the service side and manufacting defective products (Ford Pinto, Dodge Aspen...etc.) only to have other players step into the market. The other players offered a better product and outstanding service and are successful. Now my taxes and yours are bailing these corporations out of trouble.

Keep at them meStevo. It appears like playing the Lotto sometimes. Get a Pepsi and a speakerphone as you wait...lol.

Ya, cell needs to charge a bit first. Wife is going to call later if (when) it happens again.  Also starting a post over on Get Satisfaction for the issue.  I'm confident it will get fixed, just upset with the number of hoops I have to go through to do it.

The reps just aren't understanding the problem, or are not given the tools to break free from the rails their scripts are on.  It passed a self test while not demonstrating the problem, so every conclusion they made came after that, none of which are 'replace it'

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

Once I told the rep "the screen goes about 99% dark, and you can just barely read the screen" it clicked in his head it was a backlight issue.

They sent me a refurb which seems to be working fine.

I was also disappointed that the super-supervisors don't know the difference between 9am and 9pm No

Good luck.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

I'm currently having the same problem. I purchased mine in August 2008 as well. I used the remote access option rather than the telephone and it was a good experience. I am suppose to connect another monitor up today to determine if it's this monitor or not. Considering the probably is EXACTLY described by others sounds like these the E288WFPs are bad! The technician is suppose to call me this evening after I've swapped monitors, etc. I hope this goes smoothly...I will post my results later!

Started a case over on GetSatisfaction - http://getsatisfaction.com/dell/topics/e228wfp_screen_goes_blank_ts_unhelpful and have 1 dell response there offering to help.

My problem is resolved, but perhaps it can get help for others.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

DELL is sending me another monitor and I have to say my experience was much more pleasant than everyone else's. I spent about an our online chat & remote access with a DELL tech last nite. They called back today exactly as promised. And once I told them the monitor I borrowed (also a DELL) wasn't giving me the same issues, they immediately set up sending me a new one. I don't know if it's because they now realize this monitor has this problem but overall so far I am very pleased! Let's hope the replacement doesn't give me any issues! :)

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

I too just had a very pleasant, and short, online chat and am getting my monitor replaced.  Chat lasted from 7:15 to 7:37!  Of course, I also included the URL to this forum message.  Like LittleBitMI, I hope the replacement doesn't give me the same issues.

Re: E228wfp shuts down every ten minutes

I have a E228WFP connected to a non-Dell machine.  I tried to go online and chat but it won't let me go forward w/o a service tag.  Can I get warranty support for a monitor connected to a non-Dell machine?

Longhaul444:

....  You can purchase a new backligt for the monitor  for around $10-30 dollars.  This I am going to try....

PLEASE let us know a source for the new backlight.  I am willing to go this route and save myself the headache of Dell CS.
