XPS M1330 is better spec'ed than my Acer, but the Acer plays games better??

Any advice?  I have an XPS M1330 w/ T7250 2.00GHz processor, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS and Windows Vista Home Premium.  I've tried playing games like Battle For Middle Earth II, Oblivion and Tomb Raider.  Obviously this would be on lower settings, as it's not a mega-gaming machine.

While it will play them, I find it periodically crashes out of the game, or has a lot of stutter even on low settings.

What's confusing me, is that I played these same games on my old Acer laptop, which appears to have lower specs than the M1330.  Any ideas on why the Dell is not performing up to the Acer?

Acer Aspire 5672 had T2300 1.66GHz processor, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 and Windows XP.  Do you reckon it's the XP to Vista shift?  I guess the video cards are about the same, as is the Memory...processor is slightly better in the Dell.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers,

Josh

Hi,

Well one thing that I know for a fact is that a computer with vista is recommended at least 3GB of Ram. So yea, in a way it's Vistas fault. Perhaps switching to XP will reduce the lag and such. Vista is also a very big graphics hog!

Welcome to the forums josh Wink

Do you have the latest graphics drivers installed?  Try the ones available from LaptopVideo2Go (read their guide, if you haven't used them before) Idea

Do you have the latest release (November) of DirectX installed?

Do you close all background processes before starting games?

From experience, I've found that:   “Beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder”!!
