Cannot Play DVD / Dell/Roxio Cineplayer / BSOD / Nv4_disp.dll

System: Dell XPS600 3.0 Ghz Pent D / 2GB RAM / Dell installed Roxio MYDVD LE and Cineplayer / Window XP SP2

I recently had to replace my factory installed Nvidia 7900GS video card. (This is a stoy in itself. The card had been having wierd graphic corruption issues in video games and was getting worse all the time. Eventually it started having red and green pixel dots all over the screen when not playing games. When I took the factory card out to replace it, a capacitor just fell off the card when I barely touched it. Evidently it had never been soldered onto the card properly from the factory. I put the card back in without the capacitor and it still worked but still had the same issues. So I soldered the capacitor back on but it made no difference. Evidently the fact that it had not been connecting to the card properly from the beginning caused the card failure and it was not reversible.) I bought an 8600GTS to replace it. I had installed it and it seemed to be working great for weeks now. Then I tried to play a DVD. Every time the player would try to start the DVD I would get the dreaded Blue Screen of Death with reference to the file Nv4_disp.dll. It didnt matter if I used the Cineplayer or Mediaplayer, results were the same.

I did some research on the net for the issue and found lots of people were having this same error in games but could only find one who was having a DVD playing issue. None of the info I found had any solutions. I did find some reference to the newer card having some kind of hardware video enhancement called PureVideo and that it had conflicts with software DVD players. I could find no way to disable this on the video card.

I tried rolling back drivers etc, etc but was getting nowhere. Finally by pure accident I launched the Cineplayer software with no DVD in the Drive and looked at the DVD settings menu (Settings - DVD - Video) and there was a selection for Hardware Acceleration (DXVA). It was set to "Use if Available". Either my old 7900GS card had compatible hardware acceleration or it had none at all. I turned this option to off and was able to play DVD's once again.

Thought I would pass this along to anyone having the same issue.

Re: Cannot Play DVD / Dell/Roxio Cineplayer / BSOD / Nv4_disp.dll

Well, this message has at least helped me!

Just like Combat_fatigue, I had a 7900GS video card (on a Dell Dimension 9150 with Media Center) and colored pixels dots (still in small numbers) gradually appeared. Worse, there were lately more and more crashes... only 2 years after I purchased the PC :-(

So I finally purchased an 8800 GT nVidia card.

Everything seemed to work perfectly (no colored pixels dots, smooth animations, all games working nice)... except that I too got a BSOD (blue screen of death) with error nv4_disp.dll, whenever I wanted to view a DVD or watch analog TV.

Turning off the hardware acceleration in Dell CinePlayer as suggested above worked fine, but I still could not watch TV (or DVDs) from Media Center (there appears to be no option to disable hardware accelerationin Media Player).

Then I found this message in the nVidia FAQ, saying the NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder is needed. I downloaded the trial version and it works fine now. I hope this can help people with the same issue.

The only question left is: do you find it acceptable that nVidia requires people to pay an extra 20$ (the price of the Purevideo Decoder) to be able to read DVDs and watch TV using the basic system UI, namely Media Player? I could use CinePlayer but I see no other way to watch analog TV than using Media Player...

I had exact same problem.  I have Dell XPS400, Cineplayer4.0, EVGA Geforce 9800GT, Nvidia 180.48, Windows Media Center Edition 2005.  Disabling hardware acceleration did not work for me.  Downloaded PureVideo  trial version and installed.  Rebooted.  Still did not work.  Downloaded MS Video Decoder Checkup utility and changed Nvidia decoder to preferred.  Rebooted.  Still did not work.  Downloaded Gspot and  unregistered Cineplayer dvd decoder. Rebooted.  All works now.  Only one problem, I don't see a way to re-register Cineplayer in case I want to go back.

Re: Cannot Play DVD / Dell/Roxio Cineplayer / BSOD / Nv4_disp.dll

I also had the same problem:

Dimension 9200, NVidia 9600GSO, Cineplayer => Blue Screen of Death in NV4_disp.dll

Uninstall Cineplayer, and install another DVD player, and all works fine.

Dell, you need to issue a patch for Cineplayer that resolves this issue.

Something in Cineplayer's decoder is corrupting NVidia video driver for 8600GT and newer video cards.

Re: Cannot Play DVD / Dell/Roxio Cineplayer / BSOD / Nv4_disp.dll

I'm having the same problem, I just bought a 9400 GT from Dell.

My Windows Media Center won't play DVD's, Recorded TV, or Live TV.

Cineplayer doesn't work, nor does Windows Media Player.

I installed the latest nvidia drivers/software. Still happens.

I installed the nvidia decoder, Still Happens. Doesn't make much sense anyway, since that decoder is 3 years old and I can't believe they want us to pay for it.

Any other ideas?

Just talked to a "not helpful at all" overseas tech (no suprise there) who said it is a problem with my system, and its out of warrenty so he can't help.  They never take responsibility.

I reinstalled my original video card the GeForce 6800 and everything is working fine again, guess it wasn't my system like the brilliant support said.  Dell needs to fix their support, just because my system was out of warrenty, i purchased this card from them 2 weeks ago, they won't have anythng to do with it.

Never again buying something from them.

Re: Cannot Play DVD / Dell/Roxio Cineplayer / BSOD / Nv4_disp.dll

Thank you for the original post.  I just bought a BFG Nividia 9800 GT for my Dell and had the exact same issue.  After removing all drivers and reinstalling I opened a ticket with BFG.  They replied and said the issue is usually drivers but the card could be the issue, too. They recommended I get a replacement card.  I then started the search and found this post and unchecked the box as described above and it worked.  I never would have found that.  Thank you!!!
