XPS 420 major blue screen problems

I bought my XPS 420 back in December '07.  I remember getting a blue screen soon after but no problems were present and it worked fine.  However, I think some things were messed up so I did a Dell factory restore and things were fine aftewards.

Fast forward to last week, when I decided to do a Dell factory restore again because the Live! Cam Avatar software that came with my new Dell SP2208WFP monitor wasn't running.  I thought maybe something was corrupt with Windows, causing that program to not load properly.  However, after doing the first restore, I started getting blue screens again.  It would happen probably 1 out of 3 or 4 reboots.  The codes were:

0x4c

0x2

0x1

0x8...  (it's a long one that I'll fill in when I get access to the piece of paper I wrote them on)

The blue screen states the "IRQL does not equal" message.

After recovering from the blue screens, I noticed that many things in Windows were messed up.  Some of those things that come to mind are:

- XPS MiniView Dell gadgets were missing OR were not functioning properly.  If they show up, I would get an "unable to connect" type of error.

- XPS MiniView in Device Manager had an exclamation mark.

- USB HF-SC (or some combination of those letters) in Device Manager had an exclamation mark.

- Network icon in the task bar shows disconnected and any attempt at opening network configurations results in the network window opening up blank and freezing.

- Items in System in the Control Panel are missing, showing "not available."  More notable items are the Windows Vista rating (the "x.x" number that shows compatibility, mine was 5.5).

- Items in Dell Support Center regarding my system were also missing, such as service tag and warranty expiration.

- iTunes shows my music but when I try to play them, nothing plays and the progress slider that shows the progress in the song doesn't move.

I've done the Dell factory restore AT LEAST TEN TIMES IN THE PAST THREE DAYS and the same thing ends up happening.

One thing I also noticed is that one of the times, the blue screen apparently happened while doing the Windows update (it happened while I was away from the computer, same codes were kicked back).  Lumanate Lazer USB (I think that's the Dell Xcelerator) update failed and I had to roll back the driver in the control panel.  I think I had a problem with that out of the factory, causing me to do my very first system restore back in December.

I called XPS support and was on the phone with them for about 3 hours and nothing came of it (he was trying to fix the devices in the Device Manager even though that was not the underlying problem...).  I don't know if my restore partition got corrupted.  I did the extended 32-bit diagnostics and the only error I got was in one of the mouse tests where I couldn't click on the squares because the mouse wasn't moving at that point...

Sorry for the long and probably rambling post.  Those are all the details off the top of my head and this is seriously becoming a headache.  I don't know if this is a hardware issue due to a broken machine (can I get a replacement?) but constantly reinstalling everything just to end up doing it again an hour later is extremely troublesome, to say the least.

It seems other XPS 420 users are having blue screen troubles, as well, so could we have a bad batch based on a specific hardware configuration?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Well, I also had problems with Lumanate Lazer USB. I got a blue sceen crash at every Vista reinstall and when I tried to install the Luminate driver.
The LazrDiag tool failed on all tests. This caused Dell to replace the hardware. After that: no more blue screen crash from the Luminate driver and the LazrDiag tests all pass.

But I still have random lockups and reboots.

And I just notice that the 'Intel(R) 82801GB SMBus Controller - 2930 (Intel(R) SMBus 2.0 Driver' won't load anymore ...

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Do you remember the blue screen codes that it gave you?  If they were the same codes I got, then maybe that's the problem with mine, as well.

I've had the suspicion that it was the Lumanate Lazer that was giving me problems since my very first blue screen back in December.

I'll have to see if I can get a replacement from Dell to see if that's the cause.

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Thanks, it looks like you might have the same codes that I noticed on my blue screen.

0000004c
00000002
00000001
81fa4dae

Were the results above what you got BEFORE you replaced the Xcelerator or after?  I didn't notice those entries in the minidump from your thread.

I just reinstalled Vista this morning and I probably will get a blue screen again when I get back to the machine tonight.  I'd like to run WinDbg but I'm not familiar with how to use that.

Thanks again for your help.

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

The minidump (after a blue screen crash) is taken BEFORE I got the new Xcelerator.

WinDbg can be downloaded free from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/debugstart.mspx)

It is very usefull to find out which driver is crashing

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

By the way, did you try to run
C:\Program Files\Lumanate\LazerUsb\LazrDiag.exe ?

If the tests fail, it may indicate problems with the Xcelerator hardware.

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Thanks for the link to WinDbg.  I looked into that when you mentioned it before... guess I'll figure it out by using it.

On my very last blue screen that I got when running Windows update (it failed on an update for that component), I ran the LazrDiag and got fails.  That's when I rolled back the driver and it passed the LazrDiag (without rebooting).  However, I rebooted and ended up getting the same blue screen, which ended up messing up my system with the same symptoms as I listed in my first post.

Just out of curiosity, did you experience any of those symptoms?

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Well, I got several blue screen crashes (many related to Vista disk i/o drivers). After these crashes I had to reinstall. During reinstall I always got a blue screen crash related to Lumanate Lazer USB. Dell thought the other crashes were related to this crash, but it looks like they are not ...

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

OK, thanks.  Seeing as how I'll probably get the same crash again, I'm going to have to try and push for Dell to send me a new Xcelerator.  Hopefully that will solve my problems and not cause more...

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

FWIW: I have only had 2 BSODs and both were after applying A03 and trying to set RAID on in BIOS for eSata to work. Another user posted a fix for that.

I took receipt in early December, but did not take the xcelerator.

Have you tried simply tried unhooking the xcelerator cable from the MB to see what happens? I know that is not a final solution, but would help in diagnosing if the xcelerator was indeed the problem.....

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will probably try that and see what happens.

However, based on what helsten2 posted from his minidump, it appears I might have the same problem with the Xcelerator.

Re: XPS 420 major blue screen problems

OK, so after a long time on the phone, Dell agreed to replace the Xcelerator.  I'm not sure why but they're sending a tech over to do it.  Hopefully, getting this replaced will cure my BSOD problems.

Thanks for your help and suggestions, guys/girls.  I'll update this when it gets replaced in case anyone else has the same problems.
