SP2008WFP and Skype

I can't use the webcam from my SP2008WFP in Skype: the webcam starts capturing (according to the blue light), but the videowindow in skyp stays black.

Skype is not willing to help, stating that i had to buy a skype-certified webcam.

Please help!

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

In the Dell Webcam center the resolutions 352x288 and 320x240 (this one is used by Skype) are not working either. So there must be a Dell-problem, not a Skype-problem?

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Hi Boksoft,

I had been tested SP2008WFP with skype, UVC mode and Dell AP+driver mode, everything goes fine in video chat. Maybe you should remove Dell APP in add/remove program to run UVC mode, that driver is provided by MS.

By the way, what is your version of skype?

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

I'm having the exact same problem with the SP2008WFP at those resolutions (black screen, but it is transmitting something). I will remove the Dell Software and see if that helps.

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

All,

* Uninstall the Dell Webcam software and use the Microsoft default webcam driver with skype. The way to do this is to uninstall the Dell Webcam driver. Below is the list of drivers you need to uninstall (you can reinstall them later with the disc that dell provided).
- Avanced audio fx engine
- Advanced video fx engine
- Dell Webcam Center
- Dell Webcam Manager
- Live! Cam Avatar Creator
- Live! Cam Avatar v1.0
- Monitor integrated Webcam Driver (1.00.13.0608)
* Check the webcam using the Microsoft default webcam driver

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

This does not seem to fix the problem. 320x240 is still a black screen. (other resolutions seem to work, though, but I can't get the IM programs to work in anything but 320x240)

USB Video Device
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 7/1/2001
Driver Version: 5.1.2600.2180

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Hi guys I have had the same problem a nice black web screen, Dell & skype were unable to help me and didnt even aknowledge there is a problem :( :( USA wouldnt even talk to me as i'm from the UK and online help no good as there is no tag numbers for this monitor so couldnt log on to online help so stayed up late on the phone but that was a waste
I think the drivers do not work period with skype! I have tried all the updates and various combinations I think its related to the USB hub and the boot order of the program for the hub/webcam & skype but you cannot change the hub/video to load after skype
Often it will work now and then and you think its fixed or you thought is was working but trust me it often fails. So here is how I get it to work and I have had some skype users confirm on the forum there as well to this solution
  1. Boot your computor as normal
  2. Let skype sign it at boot up but do not open skype
  3. Turn the monitor off via the monitor power button
  4. Skype will now aknowledge the hub/webcam
It will work fine now but when ever you boot the computor you need to repeat the steps above
anotherway I found first was to unplug the USB but thats a pain

Let me know if it works for you and hopfully Dell will come out with new drivers I am running Vista so I do not know if this also works for XP
Has anyone been able to get Dell to aknowledge there is even a problem as I would like to think they are working on one!!!!!

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

John R Rice,

I am trying to clarify/clean up your instructions. Please check these below.

(1) Boot up your computer as normal

(2) As you boot into Windows, skype loads some software into the taskbar. Let it do this but do not sign into skype

(3) Once you are fully booted into windows, turn the monitor OFF via the monitor power button

(4) Turn the monitor ON via the monitor power button

(5) Skype will now acknowledge the hub/webcam when you sign into the application

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Chris,
You are right in what you list below but a little bit more I have found whilst playing around.
"Even with skype set to auto sign in it works OK but do not view your video in skype until turning the monitor OFF then ON"
Do you know if Dell are working on a full fix as skype appear to want to pass the buck back to Dell
as the monitor is great so is the camera just lost a bit of shine due to the skype issue
Also as the monitor doesn't have a Tag Number how do you get on line help in these situations from Dell support or have I missed something out regarding how support work.

This method works I know for Vista & skype 3.6 I do not know with regards to other versions but maybe people will report how they get on, it maybe the Yahoo work around solution as well

* Use the order number and call in.

Re: SP2008WFP and Skype

Hmmm.... Dell support for UK is very limited shame I cant use the online help as it will not reconise UK order numbers and US phone support wont either help if a UK order number :(
How do I report this problem to Dell to have them add it to their list of active problems so they can be proactive and work on a long term solution
Sorry to pump you for info
