Inspiron 1520 and Vista - Constant hanging and freezing

Hey everybody -
I'm very much hoping somebody has some suggestions for me: My new Inspiron 1520 doesn't work properly with Vista. All processes "halt" for about a minute in changing intervalls (ca. 10-15 minutes), then everything keeps going just fine. Mouse keeps working  during this, but all actions are only followed after those 1-2 minutes. Taskmanager also doesn't open until afterwards.
Sometimes everything also freezes up and upon trying to open the taskmanager the screen goes black (sometimes with cursor, sometimes without) and shows error message after a while: "Error - Security options". Pressing "quit" nothing happens until (as described above) everything starts working again.
When updating (via microsoft) didn't work, I rebooted the whole thing from CD (without actually reinstalling) - now updates work, but the halting of the system has increased to every couple of minutes. Also, the pre-installed McAffee refused to work; have uninstalled it now (possible conflict with anything?) but no change with the halting.
CPU seems fine at around 7-10%.  I have 2GB ram, btw and Vista confirmed the system is well capable to manage (compatibility etc. was 4.something). Systemchecks during startup also brought no results.

Any ideas? I looked through the Dell-sites and googled. Is this a known problem? Due to Vista or maybe more likely hardware?
I very much appreciate your help, thanks a lot! - S

I just bought an Inspiron 1520 and had the same problem but found a much easier fix. Make sure you have the latest video driver from Dell and disable the TMM service. It works! Thanks to Dell support fo that one.

The full instructions are here http://mariamagic.com/science-technology/Display-driver-nvlddmkm-stopped-responding-and-has-successfully-recovered-FIX.html

Hey Matt,
Could you please add more specifics to this? What I gather here is that all you did was to get the latest drivers for the graphics device. You didn't have to modify any BIOS settings like all of us have to work around this problem.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Well I did try what you told me and got the updated nVidia drivers from dell support. Reverted back the BIOS changes as they originally were but I still experience freezes, although not intense as earlier (somewhat equally frequent).
I can see that the hard disk light is constantly on, which seems weird.
The driver upgrade has managed to improve my graphics display by quite a lot!
Cheers.

Sure.

Did you disable the TMM service? Full instructions here :

Then go to the control panel and click 'classic view' on the left. The click 'administrative tools'. Then open 'task scheduler'. On the left, expand the branch 'task scheduler library' by clicking on the little triangle on the left of it. Then expand 'microsoft', then 'windows', then click on 'mobile pc'. Then you should see the 'TMM' service on the right. Right click it and disable.

Also the bios I am using is the latest one from the dell website also, and have ATA enabled, instead of AHCI mode, which requires to switch off the tubo cache module.

Let me know how you go.

Re: Inspiron 1520 and Vista - Constant hanging and freezing

Please also, as explained here : http://mariamagic.com/science-technology/Display-driver-nvlddmkm-stopped-responding-and-has-successfully-recovered-FIX.html

uninstall the video driver, reboot, then reinstall the new one.

So a full list:

-Download Latest video driver

-Download and install latest Bios

-Change from ACHI to ATA mode in BIOS and switch Flash Cache Off

-Disable TMM service

-Uninstall video driver

-Install new video driver

Please note all the above steps are important.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your reply. I see that you have rather done a few things more than what was suggested in the workaround earlier by Robert.

I believe the rest of us managed to get rid of the hang-ups by doing just this:

-Change from ACHI to ATA mode in BIOS and switch Flash Cache Off

I have a few questions regarding the steps mentioned on the URL you've cited:

1. How does installation of new BIOS help in this situation?

2. With the earlier workaround the status of the TMM Service doesn't affect performance. Is it really
necessary to turn off this service? Is the purpose of the service solely to identify dual monitor setup?

3. I installed the video drivers without uninstalling them. I don't think this is affecting graphics performance, but could this cause any problems?

Appreciate any other suggestions/inputs as well.

Cheers.

Re: Inspiron 1520 and Vista - Constant hanging and freezing

Hi

I tried disabling ACHI in the start but the problem still persisted. I rang dell support and they said the fix was to upgade video driver in the way stated and also disable TMM service as well. From what I can tell the computer actually works better without TMM and serves no other purpose. As for uninstalling the vido driver first, that was also recommended by dell as there have been issues b4 when not doing it this way.

As for the bios, I have no idea if it helps but I did it in the start so had to mention it to replcate exactly what has been done.

Hope this helps.

Re: Inspiron 1520 and Vista - Constant hanging and freezing

I've done a reinstall on my laptop. I enabled ahci in bios then reinstalled using the dell vista dvd. I do not have the flash cache module, so it was disabled by default. The drivers for ahci support are included on dvd but not on the factory restore image on the harddrive(which I don't use to install). No blue screens or crashing yet. I've installed the Notebook system software first, then the Intel Chipset, then Matrix storage module, then Nvidia, then ethernet, and so on in that order. Everything Good so far. Will post back!

Re: Inspiron 1520 and Vista - Constant hanging and freezing

Hi everyone,

I've been having this problem where my Inspiron 1520 laptop hangs a lot (sometimes frequently, sometimes only occasionally) and every time it does, it restarts itself. Could this problem be related to theone you were discussing earlier? It also always hangs every time I play Command and Conquer Generals, but doesn't give any problems with Call of Duty 4 or Battlefield 2, which I find very strange since bothe games are much more demanding.

Thanks in advance for any help.
