Folding@Home : Team XPS

I've taken Aivas47a's idea and run with it. If you're interested in joining this team, all you have to do is put the team number in your configuration screen.
Team number: 80856
Link to the download

UPDATE 5/3/08:

When this team was started, all of our members were completely new to this project. We fumbled around for a while, trying out many (if not all) of the different client options. We've, collectively, learned quite a bit about the various clients now, and would like to offer some helpful tips for those of you who are just getting started.

First, let me stress that this team has just one purpose; to help the scientists at Stanford University research the causes, and hopefully, the cures to todays terrible diseases. We can only do this as a team! There is not one individual on this team that is more valued or “higher ranking” than any other. We are all contributing towards the same goal. We ask that you treat the other members with respect. Many of us have become friends, and will engage in friendly “trash-talking”, but it's all in good fun. We all just want to do everything we can to get Stanford the results they need.

OK, now on with the helpful tips:

  1. Post any questions or ideas in this forum. We have some experience on this team at this point, so take advantage of it. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Every member of this team has, at some point, run into a glitch or two. I guarantee that if you have a question about folding, one of your teammates will have the answer or all of us will go looking for it.

  2. Don't be discouraged by a “point gap” between yourself and your teammates. Every member is vital to this projects success. Whether you contribute 1 point per day, or 20,000 points per day, your contribution is valued and recognized. Remember, some of us have been at this for a while and have racked up some points...so will you! :)

  3. Try to get the most out of your PC by using the best client for your machine.

(Note: I will be listing the Windows clients below but there are equivalent clients for both Linux and Mac users)

    1. If you're using a single core processor, you should use one these 2 clients:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista Graphical client 5.03

      2. Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista text-only console 5.04

    2. If you're using a dual core or quad core processor, you should use this client:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista SMP client console version 5.91

We have detailed installation instructions for these clients (and the Linux equivalents) at our other forums, RampantSpeculation.com. Just go to the Introduction to Folding board. Or, if you're having issues, just post it here and we'll walk you through it.

And finally, when you join the team, please help us advertise. Copy and paste this into your forum signature:

Just change my name (highlighted in red) to the name you used when you configured your client.

One of our great teammates, Rafael Polit, made this desktop background for the rest of the team.

It can be downloaded in Standard Aspect Ratio here, and in Widescreen resolutions here.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I was going to ask if you played on a dedicated Squad or freelanced. I just usually form a squad in game or join one. Any way my handle is [DUD] modenwalder so be kind when you kill me. Favorite map-Kubra Darn (censored - lol); Medic or Spec-Op; I love armor and then usually an engineer or medic.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I do enjoy Kubra "thing which holds back water". Great engineer points to be had there :smileywink: . I play at KBATN.net. I am KBATN_pandemic-outbreak (stop laughing...my normal name wasn't available and I was watching a CNN special about the asian bird flu at the time..lol) and I'm playing more medic than anything else lately. We switched to infantry only because it drives me nuts when a good pilot gets into a jet and just repeatedly does bombing runs on the same base. Anyhow, come by and play sometime! We are playing Strike at Karkand 24/7 right now.

I play as Anikan2Solo under the (303) squad.  I too play medic quiet a bit.  We usually play on Thursday nights.  I fly attack choppers and 2 man bombers.  I haven't played in a while, but I plan on getting on this week.  If I ever kill you, I will be sure to say hello.  :)

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

So I loaded the "no nonsense" text only version on my Media Center Dell 8400.  It errored when extracting the core.  I closed it out and restarted.  I cannot find it ANYWHERE.  Is it still on my system?  I want to remove it and install the standard version, but I can't find anything.  Do you know what process or service to look for?  The worst part is one of my HD tuners is not coming in as well since I loaded this.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.  I should stick to the PS3.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I tried the Beta SMP version as well and had no joy. I deleted the directory and cleaned registry. Reinstalled the 5.0x version and it worked.

Have you noticed the first estimate when you start or restart. Right now my job is estimated to complete in November !!!! :smileyvery-happy: It will finish tomorrow afternoon if I let it run but my guess is a lot of people start the job get the first estimate and bail.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Looking forward to it Michael.

PG... Try this
  1. Run "services.msc" from the run prompt (Win+r)
  2. Find the service called FAH@... (the details after the @ sign, tell you where Folding@home is running from).
  3. Click the process and select stop. This will kill theFAH50x-Console.exe and FahCore_xx.exe processes, which you should see in taskmanager.
  4. If you only want to prevent Folding@home from running at startup, change the service option to "manual" or to "disabled" (it should currently be "automatic")
  5. To completely remove the service, and then Folding@home:
  6. Open a command prompt to the location shown in the service manager (i.e. the location after the @ symbol)
Replace any + symbols with \ symbols.
    For example:FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home is stored inC:\Program Files\Folding@Home
    1. For those who are not familiar with navigating in the text window (cmd window) the following should work using the example above:
      1. C:
      2. CD "\Program Files\Folding@Home"
(Note that the quote marks are needed because there is a required space between Program and Files)
  7. Once in the Folding@home directory, run .\FAH50x-Console -local -configonly (where x is the number you should have seen in taskmanager)
  8. When prompted to remove the service, select yes, all other options are irrelevant since you will be removing the client. If you are NOT prompted to remove the service you can remove it via the command line like this: sc delete "FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+Console2+FAH504-Console.exe". Replace "FAH@C:+Program Files+Folding@Home+Console2+FAH504-Console.exe" with the name of the service as it appears in your Service Manager. The service name should be enclosed in quotes for maximum compatibility.
  9. Once the configuration has completed, the service will have been removed, and you can safely delete the entire Folding@home folder if you so desire

PG,

Like I said, it was scary impressive. Was getting ready to ask CHSI for some serious mentoring, but I already learned ctrl+v last week. :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Recall, I lost my first WU. I am now at 4500 of this new 5000 WU. Should put this current WU to bed about 2am.
We will see what happens to that Zero by my sig in the Team Status List. That Zero does stick out like a sore thumb! There is a need to change that! We will see what happens.
