Folding@Home : Team XPS

I've taken Aivas47a's idea and run with it. If you're interested in joining this team, all you have to do is put the team number in your configuration screen.
Team number: 80856
Link to the download

UPDATE 5/3/08:

When this team was started, all of our members were completely new to this project. We fumbled around for a while, trying out many (if not all) of the different client options. We've, collectively, learned quite a bit about the various clients now, and would like to offer some helpful tips for those of you who are just getting started.

First, let me stress that this team has just one purpose; to help the scientists at Stanford University research the causes, and hopefully, the cures to todays terrible diseases. We can only do this as a team! There is not one individual on this team that is more valued or “higher ranking” than any other. We are all contributing towards the same goal. We ask that you treat the other members with respect. Many of us have become friends, and will engage in friendly “trash-talking”, but it's all in good fun. We all just want to do everything we can to get Stanford the results they need.

OK, now on with the helpful tips:

  1. Post any questions or ideas in this forum. We have some experience on this team at this point, so take advantage of it. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Every member of this team has, at some point, run into a glitch or two. I guarantee that if you have a question about folding, one of your teammates will have the answer or all of us will go looking for it.

  2. Don't be discouraged by a “point gap” between yourself and your teammates. Every member is vital to this projects success. Whether you contribute 1 point per day, or 20,000 points per day, your contribution is valued and recognized. Remember, some of us have been at this for a while and have racked up some points...so will you! :)

  3. Try to get the most out of your PC by using the best client for your machine.

(Note: I will be listing the Windows clients below but there are equivalent clients for both Linux and Mac users)

    1. If you're using a single core processor, you should use one these 2 clients:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista Graphical client 5.03

      2. Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista text-only console 5.04

    2. If you're using a dual core or quad core processor, you should use this client:

      1. Windows 2000/XP/Vista SMP client console version 5.91

We have detailed installation instructions for these clients (and the Linux equivalents) at our other forums, RampantSpeculation.com. Just go to the Introduction to Folding board. Or, if you're having issues, just post it here and we'll walk you through it.

And finally, when you join the team, please help us advertise. Copy and paste this into your forum signature:

<a href="http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&amp;teamnum=80856"><img src="http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff207/CHSIsupplier/logo6.jpg"></a><br>&gt;<br><img src="http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/sigs/sigimage.php?un=CHSIsupplier&amp;t=80856">

Just change my name (highlighted in red) to the name you used when you configured your client.

One of our great teammates, Rafael Polit, made this desktop background for the rest of the team.

It can be downloaded in Standard Aspect Ratio here, and in Widescreen resolutions here.

If you try the SMP beta let me know. I couldn't seem to get it to install. I have noticed that I can't play BF2 while running the standard client. Not a lag issue...BF2 just refuses to run if I have FAH running.

I installed the text only client. It looks like it gave me another 5000 frame work unit.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Well I just finished my first WU of 1500 frames and am now working on a 5000 frame one. happy smiley   I must admit though that I have now switched these duties over to a Gateway E6500D performance workstation with a Pent.4 660 of mine so I could run it 24/7.   I guess I didn't like the 50% CPU usage on my Gaming and Benchmarking PC.happy smiley

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

To CHSI:
If you are wondering, I had completed my WU of 5000 but I could not get the results to upload. During my messing with the upload, I must have crunched it. Therefore, my results were a zero as displayed in the Team Results.
I discovered that I was not to select Use Internet Explorer Connection Settings.
I have started a new WU and I hope to do better.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I feel your pain runnman. When I tried to run this on my old machine, it seemed to be working alright until it went to upload the results. I don't know exactly what it did...but it gave me 9 extra completed WU's and no points :smileysurprised: . I'm pretty sure those results just got lost somewhere. Oh well...it seems like there's plenty of work to do for a long, long time. :smileywink:

Bring it on Bub! :smileyvery-happy: I'm running another >5MB WU now, so I won't be scoring again until at least tomorrow night. Plus, I'll be pausing this tonight while I get a little BF2 in. I said it was addictive, didn't I? :smileywink:

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I may be ahead now, but that is only the PS3.  I can't keep up with you guys 24/7 in the long run.  I may try to install this on my server to get a little 24/7 action.  Too bad the CPU on my server is so slow.  I have a feeling BUB and CHSI may be fighting for first long term.  Do you guys know if there is a version for the 360?

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

I always whup em! :smileywink: Nothing makes me happier than blasting some bunnyhoppers! lol Glad you got it working MichaelO.

By the way Michael, I got a  reply to this problem in the FAH forums. They said that most likely you had selected the option to only receive work with no deadlines, and since there are no WU's that have no deadlines.... Anyway, that's what they think it was.

Re: Folding@Home : Team XPS

Well the second job finished at 3:30 and looked like it uploaded but it is not showing in our Stats. At least the next jib started okay and is now running. I guess I'll see what happens tommorrow. Its a 5000 frame job.

And I hate bunnyhoppers. Kill a few more for me. I find that tanks and apc's are a fitting remedy for them. I enjoy watching them fly through the air.  :smileyvery-happy:

LOL! Unfortunately for me, we run an infantry only server, so I had to learn to bounce my crosshairs with the bunnies!
